Re: I modded my Class 5

There are a number of good mods you can do to this amp, many posted on the internet, however I discovered that there is a German self build company offering a kit called The "Jim", https://www.tube-town.net/cms/?DIY/LoW-Projekte/Jim it contains all the best mods to the amp from the internet, many of...

Re: Has anyone ever built a kit of a 45/100?

Unless you are good at soldering (everyone thinks they are, but few really are), kits look easy but to get a nice job done, be reliable and not kill yourself, you really need to be up to scratch with soldering and general cable assembly etc. The kill yourself bit is if you make a mistake, you need t...

Re: Doug Aldrich - Backstageroom

On the subject of beer whilst it's true that most American commercial mass market beers are very bad compared to the stuff we get in the UK and Europe; there are some fantastic small brewery's in the USA which I would love to get their beer in the UK. This is my favorite, discovered during a visit t...

Especially for Surf - this R9 is really beautiful and sounds as good as it looks, Gibson sure are making nice guitars currently.

Re: A few Les Pauls from over the years

Gold Top is a great Guitar, that one rings better than all the others, not sure why it sings out better than any of the others but it's really noticeable. The finish has a few problems under the surface the gold is going funny in a few places, almost looks like it's smeared, not sure why, but it's s...

A few Les Pauls from over the years

A few Les Pauls I have collected over the years - love them all, current fav is the 59 Reissue in Bourbonburst. The Les Paul Deluxe is an original from the late 70's, perfect condition, not a mark on it (yes it has been gigged lots) but the small frets take some getting used to; note the large heads...

Re: Class 5 Tube Rattle Frustration !!

The most obvious thing has not been stated here, are you sure that the new EL84 is a good tube? From your description it does sound like a tube that is causing the problem, just from the fact that you hold it and the problem stops. It is not impossible for the new tube to have a vibration fault the ...

Re: Need advice from UK members

Hi Surf - I hope you have a great trip to the UK, couple of things to consider in your described travel plans. Taxi from Heathrow to Wembley will be expensive, take the Paddington Express and use the Tube, it's easy to get around on the Tube and much cheaper. If you have a lot of bags not so easy, b...

Re: Class 5 Input Impedance and other Mods

If you have a guitar with P90's the amp is awesome after this mod is done too. I love the mods with most Fenders, P90's and any Guitar that has non humbucker pickups. With Humbuckers i.e Les Paul's the changes are more subtle, but still worth doing, especially if you use the Guitar's volume control ...

Re: Class 5 Input Impedance and other Mods

I have no similar problems with my amp, I can only suggest the obvious of checking you have the correct components installed, with the C8 the correct way round, the others are not polarised. Check that you have the other two capacitors in the correct circuit positions, they are also easy to remove a...

Re: 15 inch speaker for Class 5

There is no tone loss when you plug into a 4x12, in fact, the complete opposite, the little beast comes alive even more, is that possible? The stock speaker is fine, but you can't beat a 4x12 for shear volume of air movement. If you can't go for a 4x12, Marshall make 2x12 cabs too which also work we...

Re: Class 5 hum Mod/Fix?

I agree the first picture is modded, but is it a head unit? I'm not sure, very different to a Mk1 or Mk2 combo from the ones I have seen but who knows, I'm not an expert or claim to be one where it comes to these products. I was thinking of making the cable a screened cable, it's the primary that is...

Re: Class 5 hum Mod/Fix?

Well I'm confused by the picture I posted from the other site, as as far as I know this was for a Mk1 type amp, not the Mk2 with the valves on a different board and facing down, so this picture seems to be of a Mk1, but mine has the mains transformer under neath and the output transformer is in a si...

Class 5 hum Mod/Fix?

Marshall fixed by Hum problem, sort of, not perfect but much, much better than it was was, however not over impressed with the repair or the fix. The shop where I purchased the amp arranged for the repair, the information that came back was that some hum and some do not, it seems to be somewhat rand...
