Re: Well, that's it...

Interesting thread here. I agree that Marshall have kind of lost their way with the new products. I use 3 Marshall amps and they’re all no longer in production. The Vintage Modern is a truly great amp if you know how to use it but so many people just don’t get it!, crank it to 7 + master volume and ...

Re: Jcm 900 Mk iii 2500 new purchase

Thanks guys. I'll get round to biasing the amp when I change the valves. I tried the jump lead in the effects loop and set the dial on the back to noon. It did make it louder, but I can't make up my mind if it made it sound better? Being louder will give the impression of a more present punchy sound...

Re: Jcm 900 Mk iii 2500 new purchase

Ok thanks, I'll have to try the loop mod.
Next thing I need to do is change the tubes for some mullards and bias it. Also the tolex has some blue paint patches that I need to try cleaning off.
Cheers

Re: Jcm 900 Mk iii 2500 new purchase

I'll have to try cranking it next time I have band practice. I also played in a band with a drummer who used to like to beat the hell out of his kit, I had to run my VM 2266 at 7 master vol. just for band practice sometimes. He was also crazy. I've read about people putting a jump lead in the loop t...

Hi, The serial number begins with Y so I'd say it's a 1990.

Jcm 900 Mk iii 2500 new purchase

I just picked up a 900 mk iii 50 w second hand. I'd had my eye out for one for a while. It's a great amp though one thing I noticed is that the volume seems tame on the master until about 4 whereas my 800 is ear splitting at this setting. Anyone here own one or has experience, what volume do you thi...

Re: 5751 tube in a Jcm 800

Thanks for the input.
I would think the only reason to have the 5751 in this position would be to get that power amp saturation/full sound at a lower volume. Maybe I'm wrong?

5751 tube in a Jcm 800

I'm looking for some advice on pre amp tubes for a 2204 Jcm 800. I wondered does SteveD still post on this forum?. Anyway I managed to finally get myself a 2204 1981. Awesome amp. I had a look inside and I notice it has a 5751 tube in the third position (phase inverter?). I read that these have less...

Re: JCM 800 2204 which year is best?

Thanks guys. I play a VM 2266 these days for gigs and it is really great but I have a bit of nostalgia to go back and try an 800, I owned one back in the early 80's but sold it without giving it a chance (groan).

JCM 800 2204 which year is best?

Mrmaxelcat <25 <25 JCM 800 2204 50w head, which year? 03 Nov 2016, 03:35 Can anyone here shed some light on this? Are there any differences to the circuit of the 2204 that happened from the early 80's models to the late 80's models. Not the 2203 because I know there were major circuit changes after ...

Re: Where's my low end now?

I have NOS Mullards in all preamp positions. If you can get them they are definitely worth trying as they will make the amp sound so much sweeter and not so harsh like the stock preamp tubes. I did notice however that I lost some gain with them installed but I rectified this by increasing Detail and...

Re: Best brand of KT66 tubes

I have NOS GEC KT66's in the power amp. If you can get hold of some they are the best I've heard especially with Mullards in the preamp.

Hope this helps.

Re: Q. For SteveD re the VM sweet spot.

Thanks Surf, Yes I hadn't thought of that. Well I use a TS9 already to push the front end. As far as pickups go they are 9k SD78, I'm reluctant to go hotter as Ive found for me the tone suffers and things don't clean up so well on the volume pot with high power pickups. Maybe I'll have to try upping...

Q. For SteveD re the VM sweet spot.

This thread is open to anyone really. I'm sure most of you are familiar with the way old school valve amps reach a certain point on the MV or volume dial where you get controlled feedback and warms up tonewise with the notes sustaining into feedback. I don't know what the technical term is for this....

That's comparable to having your master set at 7 with detail ...
