I run mine through a1960AV and it sounds great. I did the same as you are intending and sold my 2266 to buy the AFD. Here are a couple of things you could try. Stick a reverb and delay in the loop. Run the power on the full 100 watts - a 6 watt VM would sound very different than our VM's. The AFD is not a VM. I had similar thoughts when I first tried the AFD. It was only when I played along with some Hendrix, gnr and Zeppelin that I realised it gets closer to these tones than the VM does.
