Re: Swapping head for combo - wise idea?

I get that you're having some fun with your stack comments - but, seriously all - can you give any real-world example where THE SOUND from a 2x12 should be deficient? Erm ... in case I wasn't clear - the above was a rhetorical question and I believe that "Yes, a 2x12 is more than enough for a great...

A lot of excitement in your post is for the visual benefits of a stack. Isn't this a lot of what's going on for its purchasers?

Re: Swapping head for combo - wise idea?

FWIW - I've played both, I own a 50w Head+a 2x12 Marshall cab and I've played the combo when auditioning Les Pauls in shops. I thought the combo sounded great - same amp character but the speakers are very rounded, vintage sounding but retained clarity. I think people get hung up on big cabs when in...

Re: Setting...more power

Bear in mind that the human ear is frequency-dependent sensitive. In other words, the brain decodes some sounds as "louder" even if that is not scientifically correct. Brighter sounds "seem" louder to us. Fender amps are famously bright so will, watt-for-watt, always be likely to hit harder than a w...

Re: Vintage Modern EQ

Some of you may not hear it but I sure do. The key to having this amp rip and snort is to roll back the mids and compensate with a good bit of presence. Been running my body and detail both on 4 . Could you give us a ballpark idea of the sound you like? I'm not saying that players should imitate bu...

Re: Vintage Modern EQ

Having had a steep learning curve with the VM here's what I recommend to anyone sitting with it for the first time: 1)Set all the eq pots to 12o'clock. Forget all about them for a long time to come. 2)Flip the mid-boost in and out to see if you like what it does. 3)Sculpt your tone from here on in O...

Re: New 2266 owner needing some pointers

[quote= Anyway I have a couple of technical questions with regards to the head. 1. Is it normal that the tone remains almost exclusively clean in the LDR mode? I am playing through a Les Paul and even with the guitar volume dimed, the tone is very clean. In contrast, the tone becomes heavily distort...

Re: Recommend inexpensive but good instrument Mics please

I have the Shure drum mic kit that comes with 3 Sm57s & 1 Beta 52A (for the bass drum). It works great. I just wonder why it only comes with 3 Sm57s since most drum kits have a snare & 3 toms? I do have another 57 though so I use that one on the snare.. 3 mics? That would be the "Glyn Johns drum mi...

Re: My Marshall Amp Shootout - 9 amps

In danger of going too far off-topic here ... but yeah, Jeff Beck ... I was really moved. Amazing. Two things - I believe he's is getting even better with age and he always has an amazing band. This time they were beyond that. Can I give you a subtle bump to request the Body-Detail settings on your ...

Re: Tightening up Bottom End

It's traditional to put an Ibanez Tube Screamer in front of a Marshall and this, along with other consequences, will tighten up the bottom end in away that can't be achieved with the amp alone. That's not to say that the VM can't be tight low down - just that a Tube Screamer will give a unique flavo...

Re: My Marshall Amp Shootout - 9 amps

Well, I'm not contradicting you - just supplying the info here that's out in the public. Please elaborate if you detect a mixed message from well-known Marshall players.

FWIW - When I saw Jeff Beck live a couple of weeks back he appeared to have Plexi re-issues on stage. Yeah?

Re: My Marshall Amp Shootout - 9 amps

I think Iron Maiden has changed over - I know they used the JMPs for a long time but I guess now they are pretty venerable (and discontinued). According to this month's Guitar World (Dec 2010) "What did you use on the record (Final Frontier)?" Adrian Smith, "Same as I use live, just simplified. I ha...

Re: Un-popularity of the VM!Why so much negativity about the

I think that in addition that the design with twin pre-amp distortion stages makes for an idiosyncratic starting point that threw me for one. For the first week with the VM I had the Body set way too high and wondered why I sounded so thick. Once you get your head round it this two-stage crunch sett...

Re: My Marshall Amp Shootout - 9 amps

Found this fascinating - I thought the differences were quite pronounced (though all conformed to the Marshall family sound). Many top players use the DSL (Iron Maiden, Gary Moore off the top of my head) but of those currently available in shops and on the demo I preferred the VM - there's an appeal...

Re: No bright tones?

Hi everyone on VM. First post. I bought my VM 50-watt head about 6 months ago and I have put a huge amount of time into tone-searching with it. Took me a week to get my head round the twin pres-thing but had much love for it since. It sounds great, great, great. I've been reading this forum all thro...
