Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

Traditional Strats don't have a Tone control for the bridge pick-up but it's an easy job to solder internally so that the middle pick-up Tone controls the bridge also. Any tech should do this for you cheaply in about 10-15 mins. I don't know if this is how the YJM Strat works but it is based on a 19...

Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

The "unpleasant" high/treble frequencies are in the ear of the beholder - get them just right and they will add a tubey "halo" to the sound. I do recognise the quality you describe and that too-much-of-this-good-thing can be a bit ... sickly sweet. The solution is all the gain structure. Not a sexy ...

Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

So I take it you've said goodbye to the DOD pedal for the time being? I nearly said just trying skipping it and just go to HDR but I thought that might be too big a sacrifice for you. Hey, glad you got what you wanted out of the VM. It took me a year to really find my voice with it (I am pretty choo...

Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

Hmmm ... so you don't like the VM LDR because it is too harsh (with the DOD)? And the HDR has too much gain? I can buy that - the VM is very responsive to the kit hooked up to it. Good when you hit it just right with guitar settings and pedals. But that characteristic inevitably narrows the "sweet s...

Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

Very interesting to hear the DOD pedal clips posted ... ... erm ... not hearing anything that isn't inside the VM. You're dialed into a very similar tone to the one I use for this style of alternate/sweep picking shredding. And I don't have an opinion (not having heard the JCM 2000 properly) but man...

Re: Hi,Steve, how to make vm combo works like a JMP 50 ?

The DOD pedal to which you refer is the secret weapon in the Yngwie sound, he's always got it on. But it's now very rare so it will be difficult for this forum to advise on how to set it (or the amp) to get a good technological partnership. I've never heard the thing "in the flesh". That said, knowi...

Re: Changing from a 1960TV cab to a 425A?

I've always wondered about this difference between "traditional" greenbacks and the "Hendrix" greenbacks in the 425 and it's stopped me from pulling the trigger on a buy. Next to impossible to find a real-world chance to A/B test back-to-back in a shop in the UK (certainly within hundreds of miles o...

Re: Buffering an fx loop.

To be honest I had a plexi 1987x up until about 2 years ago and hated the reverb before the amp. Just for anyone who might not know - overdrive/boost/distortion goes BEFORE the amp. Time based effects (delay, reverb, chorus, flange, phase) by common consensus go AFTER distortion in a signal path. T...

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

As I and others indicated, not for every one but ... disadvantage?

If you can hear a tonesuck - Yes. If you can't hear tonesuck - No, don't worry about it.

IMHO.

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

I'm trying hard but I can't quite buy into your Hendrix example - to assert definitively "low impedance ... caused a low-pass effect that improved the tone of his Strat". Improved? Your hypothesis depends on an assumption that frequency changes are the only factor in play. I would argue that the los...

Re: JTM45/100 TONES ON MY VM? HELP!

On the Eddie Kramer point ... very interesting guy who also worked with Led Zeppelin, Kiss and many others. His importance to Electric Ladyland and other re-issues would be hard to overstate. For those in the UK you might want to catch this radio broadcast of Robin Trower - he mentions in passing Ge...

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

Personally I can live with a mild "tonesuckage" / alteration of the sound if that enables me to use pedals to achive various sounds and effects that will enhance my performance .. IN A LIVE SETTING ! I love using various pedals live .. makes it more fun playing .. In a live setting it's got be a fa...

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

I completely agree and refer you to my earlier point - "Not to say you won't like the results - I can't get close to a Hendrix sound without a Fuzz Face - but it's always a trade-off between suckage and tonal variety added. Sometimes ... only sometimes ... the narrowing of the signal spectrum can ev...

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

Hi JkGriffin - I think we mostly agree. "I've sold a lot of pedals due to tone suckage." So a lot of pedals (most?) apply suckage? Agreed. "And where do you get the information that these pedals claimed to be True Bypass rarely, if ever is? I mean, I agree that Boss and Digitech rarely (I think neve...

Re: MINIMAL SET UP?

I respectfully disagree with anyone that thinks a pedal in the chain doesn't cause major tone suckage. And I mean a single instance never mind a stack of those things. Hey that's just me, don't shoot. Not to say you won't like the results - I can't get close to a Hendrix sound without a Fuzz Face - ...
