Re: Vintage Modern 2266C weirdness

Plug your guitar into the FX return and see if you have the volume back. Doing this can narrow the issue to the preamp and not the power amp. No Surf, let me clarify. :-) When I looked at the amp later, I pushed the Loop butoon (out) and everything worked again as normal. It's just that if that rea...

Vintage Modern 2266C weirdness

Because of the snow, I had to carry my 2266C down the track to our rehearsal place this week. We set up and jammed but all of a sudden I experienced a big loss of volume, and the guitar sound was nastily distorted. I assumed a valve had gone and used a spare amp and my Blues Driver for the rest of t...

Vintage Modern C1 capacitor value

Hi all, I recently tried to get my Vintage Modern modified by having somebody replace the C1 capacitor. This has not gone well, the amp now has issues and I have recovered the amp from the guy who was supposed to do it. I have somebody else in mind, but I want to present him with all the relevant in...

Re: Vintage Modern - Steve's Gain Mod

Update - and first impressions Right, I got a local chap to do it. He's more of a TV repair guy, I think although he does sell and fix amps too, my bass player thought he was all right. Unfortunately there was some confusion and he initially found another C1 on the little daughter board (that I thin...

Re: Vintage Modern - Steve's Gain Mod

Angus, I honestly believe you should take your amp to a tech. You could ruin your amp if you have no idea what you're doing. I have found somebody locally to do the mod. yay! :-) Can anybody confirm what the stock capacitor is at C1? I wasn't quite clear from the description I read in this thread: ...

Re: Vintage Modern - Steve's Gain Mod

Angus, I honestly believe you should take your amp to a tech. You could ruin your amp if you have no idea what you're doing. Guilty as charged. :-) Although, I'm gradually picking up a bit of (non practical) stuff in my research. I take on board what you say, Steve, and will give it some more thoug...

Vintage Modern - Steve's Gain Mod

Hi all, I wanted to try Steve's Gain Mod, that is: SD: If you wanted 'more' from the Vintage Modern then changing C1 to 1uF/25V (making sure the polarity is correct) and maybe even C2 to 2.2nF/400V would certainly deliver some heat without destroying the tone. Trouble is I don't have any amp technic...

Re: Biasing Vintage Modern 2266C first time - advice?

DCmV is what the meter should be set to. By measuring the voltage across the 1 ohm resistors, the DCma is the same ~ Volts/Resistance = Current and it's this current through the power valves that's of interest to us. In your case, 33mV/1 = 33mA Thanks. After giving the amp a brief high volume try, ...

Re: Biasing Vintage Modern 2266C first time - advice?

Update: I tried the multimeter without manually adjusting it to AC, and got more recogniseable readings: around 33.0 I tweaked the trim pot and the multimeter currently displays 47.0 on both valves so, I'm hoping I'm on the right track, now. I will check it again later to see if it stays put. The di...

Biasing Vintage Modern 2266C first time - advice?

Hi there, Having apparently sorted out a noise issue with my amp, I thought I would investigate re-biasing the power valves. I don't know much about electrical stuff, but I know to be very careful. I bought an inexpensive but apparently reasonable multimeter and an insulated trim pot adjustment scre...

Great to hear that replacing v1 has fixed your problem. Checking valves is a simple fix when it works.

Re: Vintage Modern - Low/High range background noise

Unfortunately even pros have issues like these, which is why they employ various means to cure/or mitigate the issues!. I understand the hesitancy to use pedals, everything from the hassle of setup to the worry of tone robbing, FEAR NOT! for a long time a lot of tone snobs had me believing that FX ...

Re: Vintage Modern - Low/High range background noise

Update: First of all, I know next to nothing about this stuff, I've never biased the power valves or done anything beyond changing the preamp valves. So I go very carefully. Right, I turned on the amp with the back off, and gave each of the valves a tap with my pencil. Nothing that sounded microphon...
