Didn't see this thread when it first came out. First, I agree with Anatoli as usual. 6100 sounds great at any volume....though I wouldn't say it cops a 100W plexi tone to my ears. Still great sounding at low levels, and you can take it and gig at the enormodome if you want. Ironically, I find that t...
Sometimes the FETs in the loop go bad. To diagnose which might be bad, set the loop level to -10dBV, plug your guitar directly into the return and make sure that the loop is enabled. If you get an output, then it points towards a FET on the send side gone bad (and if I recall, this seems to be the t...
Demos are never great at letting you get a good feel for how you'll experience the amp in person...but they're all we've got unless we can try one in person. In any case, here's another one I came across. Stores are starting to use the Custom to demo their high end guitars, which says something I th...
Perfect timing! I've never had a "bedroom" amp actually in my bedroom before. Sold the old farm house for a house on the water, and have a condo near the office. In the condo, I have the JTM-1H with a Vox 2x12 of Celestion Blues....and it occurred to me that it's time for a tube change.
It's important to keep in mind that a 100watt amp is only twice as loud then a 10watt amp. So the difference you would get going from 30 to 5 would not be percieved as 70% drop in sound. So how many watts does it take to get twice as loud? Let's imagine two amps—one 10 watts, and a second 20 watts....
I didn't notice Cousin's post before. I used to run my Mark 4:23 through the loop of my VM because it fattened up the tone in LDR. In the Astoria Custom, it's much more transparent. It's acts as a volume boost, which comes in really handy live if you roll off the volume control on the guitar to clea...
I've been running an older version TC Flashback delay, an EH B9 organ pedal (just for a couple of songs on our set list where it's needed) a run of the mill Boss chorus pedal and a Mark 4:23 clean boost in the loop. The clean boost is particularly useful with this particular amp. It lets you have fa...
Bummer... All I can say is that the crunch channel with an Xotic BB boost in front to send it up and over is a thing of beauty on mine. There isn't anything inherent with the amp that prevents it from doing what you want it to do. And a muddy channel 3 is definitely not what you'd expect. Be patient...
I tend to agree with you Anitoli. I guess there are two separate questions.... 1. Do vintage caps go bad, either sitting on the shelf, or left idle in your amp? I think that we'd all agree that the answer is yes, depending on the type of cap. 2. Is there a discernible difference in tone between caps...
Thanks for posting Spangitter, and I didn't mean to dismiss TM1, who I know to be a very knowledgeable guy. I think you've gone some way in answering my question (not that I phrased it as one). So, your contention is that there really are measureable parameters (ESR or otherwise) that are significan...
Depends on their type and construction... But I've yet to hear the argument as to why in the world two capacitors of the same type and value could sound different (and I've yet to actually hear a difference). I suppose older component could have drifted in value for whatever reason, but if so, it wo...
