Re: DSL ruined from guitar cable connecting to speaker cab ?

Well , here's the scoop. The amp is now fixed. Turns out 2 tube sockets were cooked as well. Melted. Part of the board was fried as well. Remember , there was a powersoak involved , a guitar cable ( instead of a speaker cable ) , and looks like there was a 6 amp fuse in it , instead of a 1 amp fuse....

Re: What exactly is the VM?

Hallelujah !! Thanks guys. This amp is very sensitive to speakers , cabinets , guitar choice , pickups , and material type used in all of the above. I think you fellows that hang out here frequently should mention this fact ( with a lot of conviction ) , to newbies ( like me ) , who might be quick t...

Re: What exactly is the VM?

Geesh , does any read the posts ? I'm loving my VM. I asked if anyone truly understands the midboost ? I believe it's more than just the flattening of the EQ. Since changing pickups , the positioning of the knobs for MY favorite tone has COMPLETELY changed. I said I can achieve MY tone now in HDR ( ...

Re: What exactly is the VM?

Marshalls and (most amps i guess) have kind of a dip in the midrange on it´s frequenzie curve. When you engage the mid boost on the VM you kind of even out that dip so you get a more straight curve. Doing that i think makes the amp get a little more gain also. The mid boost only works on the body c...

Re: What exactly is the VM?

No. Seriously , ( Steve ) what the heck is this VM ? Just when I think I've got this amp figured out , I don't. I just put a new pickup in my Gibson , and it has totally changed this amp and it's settings once again. I was told by someone on this forum that the mid boost - is not a boost - in the ge...

Re: The secret to getting the best out of my VM !

Hey , just put a Seymore Duncan 78 in one of my Gibsons yesterday. Wow. Sounds nice. This amp sure is sensitive to pickups. .... It's GREAT !

( in my early posts , I was quick to criticize the VM. ). Lesson learned. Just want to make others aware too.

Play on. :shredder

Did your DSL have the correct fuses installed?
Hi Steve.
I will mention it to my tech. I don't know for sure. I know HE was surprised. He told me he tested it and it was a dead short. Can you add any insight ? ( BTW , I'm loving my VM ) nice job !

Re: Observations.

Funny , ....... I use my VM in HDR all the time , and it isn't noisy in the least. Im leaving the Detail around 3:00 too. This amp is quiet. Since I lowered my pickup a bit , this amp isn't harsh sounding at all now. Great amp. -- Tue Jun 28, 2011 7:08 pm -- Oops forgot to mention mine is a 2466 - 1...

Re: DSL ruined from guitar cable connecting to speaker cab ?

No need for your Tech to 'bad-mouth' the various internal components. The DSL is a fantastic head and all it's internals are better than 'fit for purpose' so long as you use it properly. My tech didn't HAVE to bad mouth the internal components of the DSL. ALL he had to do was SHOW me the internal c...

Re: DSL ruined from guitar cable connecting to speaker cab ?

Well , after a trip to my amp techs place , the verdict is in. ( drum roll ) .................... Both transformers shot ! $250 + labor , and this hybrid piece of crap will be as good as new. While he had it open , he showed me the GUTS. the ribbon cables , the micro switches , the nonreplacable pot...

Re: The secret to getting the best out of my VM !

:Thumbs Good deal Nugget. I've had the opposite occur in the past with NEW guitars ( and different amp ) , where my guitar sounded lifeless and dull. In that case , the pickup needed to come CLOSER to the strings. Take advantage of the adjustment screw on EACH side of the pickup. Don't just set them...

Re: The secret to getting the best out of my VM !

WOW. I had to write. Again , I must stress to anyone looking to get the "Brown" sound out of their VM , ( pickups , pickups , pickups ). What a fricken difference it makes. Backing off my bridge 498 was the cats azz. I just played every tune off Van Halen 1 , and would have kept going , had I not br...

Re: The secret to getting the best out of my VM !

What pickup are you using? Just a standard gibson 498. I'm not saying it's the BEST choice in pickup either. This one has a gold cover on it as well. I just wanted to say that there is a VERY Audible difference in tone when adjusting pickup height - that can easily be heard with this amp. A phillip...

The secret to getting the best out of my VM !

I've owned my VM for a few weeks now , and I have to say , I'm finally satisfied. I have struggled a bit with harshness at times , especially when using a lot of gain. I've considered doing the mod mentioned on this forum - not because I really wanted MORE gain , but because I thought it would make ...

Re: Best Clean boost to push the LDR

LDR plus boost for rhythm and HDR for solos. Hmmm, that's interesting. I'll bet that would work pretty sweet. I've found when recording , less distortion is always better. My studio isn't done with renovations , so I haven't had the VM on the mic. When I jam heavy rock tunes in front of the speaker...
