It's my understanding that the EPA sucks the current off the power and PI valves, hence why you get less overdrive. I find it to be a no issue as long as you don't put the EPA below 12-1 o clock. Lower than that and you will want to make up for the lost territory with a good (clean) booster. And the...

I often use a passive volume pedal in the loop.
I don't get a volume drop when the pedal is all the way up so I would speculate that your's is kaputt in some way.

Try the 50w switch and you get a lot more "natural" gain at moderate volumes.
On the other hand I don't see the issue with using boosters. guitarists do that ever since the first Plexis were released.

Like you I get the best sounds with the stock valves.

I think with the right guitar, fingers and mindset you would get that sound out of the YJM.
The build in Reverb would probably be a bit too dark though for that EVH sound so you would want to drop an external effects unit into the loop.
