Tried a different power tube in the JMP1

Hi Folks, I've been away for a while but I recently tried something that might be worth sharing. A big part of the charm of the 1 watt series for me was the availability of the NMV versions. After many years, the JTM and JMP amps have been the best "low volume" solution for some great marshal tones....

Re: JMP1 Jimi style with Treble booster and Roto

Thanks Schwa. I'll try my Hendrix fuzz face, but really find a little amp through a 1x12 speaker can't handle fuzz very well. A 100w amp and stack have so much sound that they can better accommodate a harsh sounding fuzz. So I'm always looking at how to lesson the harshness of the fuzz while retain...

Re: JMP1 Jimi style with Treble booster and Roto

Thanks Jeff, glad you like it. Yeah they can sound great with the right setup. Here though it's being used on an amp that is mostly mids. So it expands the bass and treble while reducing the mids. Seems to work ok. I like the way you summed up the JMP1 t75 pair. I have found with other amps that th...

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

The Para EQ is a pretty good pedal, like you I have found other EQ pedals lacking. It's a bit like the 4 band paras that are common in DAWs - but one band short. I do commonly use it with another amp - to boost the mids - and could imagine using it as an insert on my small mixing desk. It's one of t...

No danger of turning it into a JVM - the JVM has an unfortunate (IMO) clean power section.

Re: JMP1 and T75. It's a Monster!!!

Dare I say this recording sounded a bit "brown" - as in VH brown? For me, a big part of the charm of the 1 watt amps is the ability to get NMV Marshall tones at sane levels. The brown sound can be a challenge for many players - it's difficult to do in the preamp - because that is not how Edward did ...

Re: JMP1 and Greenback v T75 speaker

Great playing as usual. I kinda wish you had played the same riffs with both speakers, but that's nit picking, isn't it? It's great to hear a true A/B of the two speakers, you can hear the difference in character between the two. I may have actually preferred the tone of the GB's on the recording, b...

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

Hi Schwa, we had a good time, hope you did too. I will try the T75, but could you tell me how you had the amp and EQ set up? Hi Al, To tell the truth, I'm still twisting knobs... Looking at the amp just now, I have them set at 6, 6, 9 boost off. The eq is the Empress Para EQ, which I really like, b...

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

Hey Al, I hope your holidays were fun and joyous. You know better than most that I have wrestled with this amp for 3 years or so - I love the gain curve, but not so much the EQ. I learned a few years ago that speaker choice can make a big difference with an amp - more so than tube rolling - it seems...

Re: The definitive speaker guide for the 1 watt amps.

I wanted to throw out a thought for folks who think their JMP1 is heavy on the mids and shy on the bass.

I have been playing through a Celestion T75 recently and like the results. It's known for it's scooped character, and the trimmed mids and enhanced bass really help the amp to sound its best.

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

I tried some things recently that have given encouraging results. These things seem to address the mid forward/bass shy eq that I find in the JMP1. I opened the back of my cab. I know that closed cabs should be more bass focused, but I seem to be getting some bass off the wall that I was not before....

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

Linster, those are some awesome cabs. I did a similar thing, with Stagecraft, but mine's not a slant, and not quite to scale. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l87/peetaromicus/Amps/1x12-web1.jpg Cab looks nice, but it's still bass shy and mid forward. I picked up an EQ (empress ParaEQ), and it let ...

Re: JMP1 - recommend some alternate power tubes for less gain/better crunch?

I really like the JMP1, I think it has a great gain curve. With all due respect to surfnorthwest, I thought the 12AU7's were lower gain than the 12AT7's. I ran a bunch of tubes in the amp - the others types are less expensive than OS Mullard 12AX7's - I thought the OS Mullard ECC82's did not have en...

Re: JMP1 Bass control ?!? (combo owner)

I learned something in this thread. I have the head, but did notice the bass shy/mid forward nature of this amp, and was not a fan. The thing I learned was that the mids do indeed come up as you turn the bass control. The speaker in the combo is a bit a weirdo. It has tons of mids. Changing the spea...

Re: Just tried a Suhr Badger18, Corso and Pink Taco

Hey Al, Interesting review, I have had the badger and the taco on my radar from time to time. It sounds like you mostly played them at lower volumes. Did you have a chance to open them up? I have a 2061x - a bit like these guys. But I've found it needs to be played at "drummer volume". I have an att...
