Re: Marshall Vintage modern 1987 preamp

Hi Nico, Thanks for the info on the choke. I don't play my VM much anymore - not because I don't like it - I just don't have the opportunity to really crank it up these days. Not a bad thing cause it gives me the opportunity to experiment a little bit :). Similar to you I have experimented with some...

Re: Marshall Vintage modern 1987 preamp

Hi Nico,

So the choke made a big difference to the noise? Also, what is the choke's D.C resistance?

Super100JH Voltages?

Hi, Does anyone know what the voltages are on the Super100JH circuit? I've been playing around with a 'spice' circuit simulation of the Preamp section (using the schematic: SUPER100JH-60-02 ISS3) and want to check if the simulation is in the ball park. I read in the forum - SteveD had said the HT ra...

Re: Negative feedback

Hi Steve,

A question regarding the NFB snubber (C80,R91). Is the snubber required due to the extra gain stage of Vintage modern (in high dynamic range) compared with say the Super100JH which does not have the extra gain stage potentially causing oscillation?

cheers

Anyone using a Fuzz face style pedal with their VM?

Hi, Just curious if anyone uses a Fuzz face style pedal with their VM? When I tried my germanium transistor fuzz face pedal on the VM with my strat - I dial in a nice tone then when I add the fuzz it becomes pretty crazy definitively not smooth, fat etc. It's like the fuzz is too much input for the V...

Re: Noisy combo

This sounds very similar to the input jack problem I had.... (I think you have already read my post - but just in case you haven't) The input jack should 'short' to 0V when the lead is not plugged in (which stops it 'picking up' lots of hum. The hum is heavily amplified in HDR mode). For some reason...

Re: All dials at 10 get loud roaring hum

Hey guys - I found the solution to my problem!!! Normally when the input jack has no guitar lead plugged in to the input jack - the input should get 'switched' to ground via sprung metal in the jack ( At least I think so anyway!). Because my amp is 5 years old the sprung metal which should do this n...

Re: All dials at 10 get loud roaring hum

Hi rasze, Do you get the hum with no guitar plugged in? The hum I'm experiencing you would have to speak loudly, if not shout to be heard over the top of the hum. And the fact it can also self oscillate (no guitar plugged in) with master over 8 makes me think it is not normal even for a high power h...

Re: All dials at 10 get loud roaring hum

I've edited what I wrote above as I had more time today trying to find the source of the hum e.g resitting valves, checking bias etc) (bias was 43mV on both so I pushed it up to 45mV). Checked the earth continuity. Also no problem with excessive hum if body and detail are zero and I plug guitar into...

All dials at 10 get loud roaring hum

Hi guys, I own a VM combo - has anyone else had/have this this problem: HDR mode on, Mid boost on, - Turn all dials up to 10 except detail and body knob. No guitar cord plugged in, nothing in the return loop. As I turn up the detail and body knob the hum gets super loud. ( the hum is o.k when the bo...

Re: Using just one speaker in VM combo and Factory Mods

Yeah that does makes sense. Oh well I won't bother trying that unless I got into power scaling. If I understand the theory correctly if I have 1 speaker and and the amp is setup to only deliver 25W that would be safe. I would get power tube compression and speaker compression. However the percieved ...
