Re: Astoria Custom Combo, first impressions and some questions

Congrats on the new amp. Looks great in vintage. From my own experience with the Custom here are a few thoughts. Firstly it's hard to get a bad sound out of it! I have used it with gain lower and master high and it sounds great, with gain cranked and the master lower on low power mode it still sound...

Re: Astoria Tube Layout (hum...)

The symptoms you describe matched what happened to my Custom just before the humdinger trimpot decided to melt. Don't know if the same component is in the Dual? Documented on a thread lower down on the board titled help needed...

Re: Astoria Dual

Great sound Sigi. Well done. As well as being a fab stage amp, my Custom is great for home recording at even low volumes. The Dual clearly records well too.

Re: Astoria Grill Cloth..

That looks fabulous. Excellent job.
Do you have a special tool for removing the staples? My staple gun uses bigger staples than the stock, would that still work in your opinion? I'm tempted to start from scratch with some birch ply and new piping too.

Re: Astoria Grill Cloth..

To get the baffle off, remove the two back panels and unscrew the large screws and the smaller screws (no need to unscrew the speaker). To get the baffle out, I then had to remove the top panel at the front (it is cosmetic) - this was tight and only released with some gentle tapping through the smal...

Re: Astoria Grill Cloth..

Thought I'd have a look at the baffle and assess how difficult it would be to change the grill cloth to a BB style. These cabs are built like a tank. Everything is so tight and having eventually got the baffle off there are many many staples holding the piping and grill cloth to the sides. Put me of...

Re: Astoria Grill Cloth..

Be sure to post some pics with the new cloth. I'm intrigued to know what SteveD would have chosen - the BB pinstripe?

Re: Astoria Custom Speaker Choice

Well that was interesting! This is what I did to test the speakers: Amp settings 5W mode (master out), Master 5, Edge 8, Bass 7, Mids 10, Treble 7, Gain 6, Loop off I tried a Greenback G12C 1x12 16 ohms, the Creamback G12H 1x12 8 ohms, Greenback G12C 2x12 8 ohms and Greenback G12C 4x12 16 ohms. I us...

Astoria Custom Speaker Choice

Been trying my Custom head out with the 2x12 G12C speakers in my VM combo and really loving the sound. I prefer it to the Creamback stock speaker. If I were to replace the Creamback with a Greenback in the 1x12 Astoria Cab would an 8ohm G12M (25W) be OK for power handling or would a G12H (30W) be a ...

Re: Bad News For The Astoria Line..

Shame about the Astoria's demise. I love my Custom - it's particularly good in a band situation standing out really well in the mix. I'm lucky that I reached a time of life when I have enough spare cash to afford one - for most of my life I was stuck with cheap solid state amps. I guess the Astoria ...

Re: Astoria custom issue please help

Is there any burning or scorched smell when you get your nose near the top vent? If so I may know what the problem is. (Have a look at a thread below about an issue I had.) Also when my Custom arrived, one of the big Power tubes had worked loose and was wobbling in its socket. That's easy to check -...

Re: power tube swap

My 2266C developed a rattle then a crackle. In that case it was that the glass part of the stock tube had become loose from the brown base. Until I found it the problem was intermittent and depended on how loud I was playing and which notes (some kind of resonance presumably). If it is a problem wit...

Re: Astoria Custom Problem Help Needed

I thought I would do a bit of research on the component that failed. As far as I can tell the datasheet for the 15mm Piher pot is here: http://www.piher-nacesa.com/pdf/14-PT15v03.pdf Is my interpretation correct that this component is rated at 0.25W at 50 C and that its wattage reduces with increasi...
