I've been using preamp model 16 for most of my tones and getting pretty good results. The key is keeping the gain low, I set the treble on 0, mids about half way and bass on 10. Adding some subtle delay can add some fullness.

Yes, it definitely couldn't hurt. Also, unplugging the amp when not in use for a period of time.
