Re: Resistors Carbon Film or Metal Film? SteveD?

Nice Work!! You can get CC's that are 10% and made in Japan. There are also ones that are 5% They're made by Ohmite, TE & Kamaya. A little pricey, but sonicially well worth it..

Re: Resistors Carbon Film or Metal Film? SteveD?

I'd rather carbon comp any day! I was talking with Derek Underdown, who back in the day was Dick Denny's Boss at Vox/JMI.. This was in 2008 when I met him. He told me that he preferred Carbon Comp over everything because it's warmer and harmonically richer and brings out the note detail alot better ...

Re: Gut shot of my Astoria Combo

You didn't get cheap on any of the tubes in there did you? Those KT66s are cool. Yeah, I didn't go the inexpensive route.. I bought alot of 12AX7's back in the mid-90's from Langrex Supply in Croyden (I think they've since moved to another location near by to where they were.. I think I paid around...

Re: Astoria Custom vs Red House SteveD get in here

You may want to try a 12AU7 in either V1(input) or V4(phase Inverter) and see if that cleans up the gain.. or.. if you're not using the effects loop, use it as a pre-PI gain adjustment. You should be able to use either thing to lower the gain more to vintage gain settings. I use mine to run my Carl ...

Re: Gut shot of my Astoria Combo

Decided to try a set of the Shugang "Treasure" KT66's. They only put out about 28 watts clean vs the 33 watts my GEC/M.O.Valve's have. Also the GZ37 rectifier valve puts out only 400v D.C. But quiet happy with the sound/tone of the amp into the Celestion Alnico Ruby. I do have a set of 1959 Osram-Ma...

Upgrading an Origin?

Has anyone here upgraded their Origin? I have one here that the owner wants a new Ruby Alnico Celestion in along with Mercury Magnetics output tranny & a choke and signal path components. Looking forward to getting rid of the Chinese rubbish in there.

Re: Marshall Astoria Classic, New KT66’s Recommendations

I’ve used NOS Genelex, the new Electro Harmonics made “Gold Lion’ and the Valve Art/Marshall branded ones. No issues with installing them in my combo.. It’s tight, but they fit!

Re: Speaker change in a 1974x - f.e. Alnico Blue

I have a late 40’s Rola BO 23/24 in mine. It’s a 12-15 watt Alnico. Never had an issue. It’s a very loud speaker. I have an old Silver Alnico Vox Celestion in my 1962 brown Fender Princeton. I have a replica Marshall 2x10 (#1958) with two 10” Elac Alnico speakers. I had my doubts, but it sounds pre...

Re: 2061x issue..

My friend Patrick @Mercury Magnetics said their MC10H would work better than the MC-7H as it has a DC resistance or 290 ohms. It’s strange as I’ve used this choke in other 2-EL84 amps in basically the same spot.. haven’t had any issues. But as soon as I told him he said I needed to use the larger ch...

Re: 2061x issue..

It’s basically between the two terminals of the dual 50uf smoothing can. Would you suggest a better/ different spot?
Cheers!
