Re: 100w Plexi v JTM45 v 20w Plexi

Thanks. I can't pick a favourite! But it has really helped me recognize how different the basic tones are between JTM45 and Plexi. If I said it was like Clapton vs Kossoff, would I be (like) far out (man)?

Re: What is your current favorite amp

VM2266c for sure! I'm still finding new tones after 2 years with it. Recently Ive started exploring the mid-boost, with appropriate retweaking of detail and body, there's yet another range of great tones there. I also appreciate how the design is the personal work of Steve D, and his experience, tal...

Would there be any mains-side fuses or indicator lights that would need to change?

Re: So I am building my own 6912 /1912 extension cab

I think that second pic above may be a 1933 cab.

here's a (Russian?) site where someone measured out a 1912. Seems like it has two ports:

Biased through the effects loop return?

What magic is this?

Re: The Klon Centaur is Back

I think Bill F is probably the only guy in the world where making pedals one at a time at home is a great business plan. Anyone else, or more specifically any other pedal, would bring in 2 or 3 hundred $ max for the same amount of effort.

Re: Vintage Modern 2266 vs Sudio 20 Vintage

Id like to know too! - how the SV20 compares to a VM, and lets throw in the Origin's since all are current/recent single-channel, vintage-inspired Marshalls All three are current options for how we could spend our $, given we have or can find a second-hand VM. Even after a year, I haven't seen anyth...

Re: SV 20 Or SC Head

That 20/5 change is a -6db step. Ive been building attenuators recently, and I've been basing them on a series of -7db steps (ie close to -6db), down to -28db. I find that -7db is a significant change, but not a huge step. Its fine enough if you have some flexibility in exactly what volume you use (...

Re: Steve Smith Demos the Studio Series

I noticed Steve said that the 20W to 5W change is done by a pentode/triode switch. What do we expect with that with regards to tone difference in the two modes? He was discussing the JCM800, but I assume the Plexi works similarly.

Re: Advice on Using the Vintage Modern

Personally, Im ok with the features of a stock VM. But to work around the issue above, how about this, as a build project:? A passive box with 4 pots and one standard footswitch. Two sets of in and out jacks, for use on the signal before the amp, and also in the FX loop. Run the guitar to the first ...

Re: Advice on Using the Vintage Modern

One thing that might be worth checking is the guitar tone itself, when running at low volume. Its a classic issue that when you roll off the volume, the capacitance of the guitar cord cuts more into the high treble. And for a clean tone, once its gone, you cant get it back downstream. If this is a p...

Re: Low Range Volume and High Range Boost Volume mod

If I wanted that, I think Id much rather develop an external work-around box using the FX loop and LDR/HDR switch, than to modify a perfect amp! just my opinion

Re: Maiden announces tour dates.

That's quite a schedule for a bunch of older guys with a big show! there's quite a few dates the next day after the previous one, in a different city. How'd they do that? They're not just a young bar band with a couple of amps tossed in the back of a pickup truck.

Re: C16 - 100nF - capacitor right before Fx Loop

That c16 is feeding into a very high impedance FET input, being tbe biasing of FET3. The cap value is large enough in this case to pass through the lowest bass notes unaffected while blocking dc. But if it was bypassed, it might affect the biasing of the FET in a bad way
