New owner of a 2266 and 425a (They are enroute)

Postby timcrawford » 25 Nov 2012, 12:52

Purchased a "restock" 2266 from Musicians Friend, should be here this week. I had previosuly added it to the cart many a time, then one day I logged in and there was a "yellow banner" that stated items in my cart were now available at a lower price. BAM! SOLD!

I plan to open up the unit and check to make sure the tubes are seated and any other signs of possible abuse that may have taken place.

Just give the unit a good look see before pluging it in. I did purchase the addtional warranty they offer.

Does anyone know if MF actually checks restocks for operation? Wondering if I should verify the tube bias.

I first was drawn to this amp becuase of the "detail" and "body" controls. I can hear endless possiblities coming out of the speakers combined with the controls on the Les Paul.

After I recover from this economic loss I plan to purchase a spare set of tubes. Thinking of just staying stock as far as the tunes are concerned.

The other half of the economic loss was the purchase of a used Marshall Vintage 425a cab from ebay. Sort of worried that there was no pictures verifyng the actual speakers installed. Seems to be a reputable dealer so I will take my chances. Will find out in December when the cab arrives. All the research I did on this forum, youtube and google showed me that you cannnot go wrong matching the 425 to the 2266.

At any rate I am walking on cloud nine waiting for the new equipment to arrive!

I have been sort of trying to learn to play the last five tears. Most of those five years I spent trying one guitar or another and different amps and speaker combinations. The last six months I have settled into a practice regime and know what I want. (Almost sounds like a song) And during the next five years I hope to obtain rythem.

*UPDATE* New owner of a 2266 and 425a (They are enroute)

Postby timcrawford » 30 Nov 2012, 17:42

The amp arrived before the speakers so I played through a old vertical 2x12 that is loaded with a Texas Heat and a Swamp Thing. I tested the amp through each speaker and combined. OMG the Vintage Modern Amp puts all my other amps to shame. Just simpley clean as can be. The 425a cab arrived a few days later. I was in for a shock. The differenace between my 2x12 and the 425a was the differance between night and day. Talk about soft creamy easy on the ears tones the 425a was like the clouds have parted and angels were singing in the background type of experience. Enough said should have upgraded a long time ago.
Folks are right, if you are crappy the Modern will make you even crappery - it translates everything you do on the guitar!
In order to be worthy of such a beast I am increasing my practice time frames and raising the intensity of my level of attack in learning.
Yes, my new practice amp is the Vintage Modern 425a, the other amps will probably be sold one day or passed on to a family member.

Thank you Marshall.

Congrats on the 2466, I think you did right there. I only ended up with the 2266 becuase it was a restock and marked down just to where my budget allowed me to dive in. But I tell you, your other purchase the matching 425 cab is awesome. I have a few amps hanging around the house. After playing on the 2266 I am seriously thinking of letting the other amps go.

After a couple of months you will be really liking it. Most guys find the VM to grow on them as they get pretty good at using it with their guitar, its such a good single channel amp.

The 425 cabinets are excellent also as you pointed out, takes a good while to break them in but once you do the cab delivers.

*UPDATE* Re: New owner of a 2266 and 425a (They are enroute)

Postby timcrawford » 05 Dec 2012, 21:22

My mains HUM seemd a tad loud to me, of course I am partially deaf in that area.
I was thinking I had a bad preamp tube.
Seeings how I purchased a restock and therefore didnt know what abuse the tubes had taken I upgraded to the Genalex Gold Lion KT66 and Prefered series 7025 tubes from thetubestore- the 2266 Premium package.
Had no issues removing chassis, I could tell that someone had worked the screws before me, such is life with a restock sometimes.

The old tubes all came out and the new ones went in with no issues.

Connected a speaker, plugged in mains and allowed amp to warm up. Checked bias, was "50mv" on both tubes and I still had what I considered to much hum. (I was hoping that a pre-amp tube had gone south and was causing the hum.) I wish I had checked the bias on the old power tubes. I adjusted the bias down to 47mv around 49mv the HUM went away! (BTW my year amp has TWO trim posts.)
Both sides are set now for 47mv. (I can only surmise that the power tubes were over biased and causing a bit of a hum)
Now what I thought was a great sounding amp is even a better sounding amp for my ears anyway.

The amp is smoother and all the notes in a chord ring individually.

Saving the pulled tubes for backup as expect they are fine.

An updade; It's been 2 weeks since I bought/ordered my 2466, still hasn't arrived, although the 425A is ready, the head is on back order. My dealer has no idea how long that could take. Since I am in Canada, I am assumming they get shipped from the UK which probably takes time???

In Sarnia. Southwestern Ontario. It's not a very musical town, out of 73 000 plus people we have one dealer, and since we are border town with the United States, most people just go across the border to Guitar Center. But seeing how I don't have a vehicle that option was out. My dealer is a friend of the family, he sold me my first guitar almost 20 years ago, and every guitar since. He got me a good deal on the VM.
