2266C Input Transformer runs hot under higher load

Postby Tonehouse » 10 Nov 2017, 23:18

Sounds awesome but is this normal for a VM 50W with higher load?

MV / Body / Detail all 5's with HotShot ABY into another good amp.

Especially warm input xfmr with two 4x12 Celestion G12C G12M cabs after an hour yet output xfmr consistently stone cold.

Yes, that seem normal. The power x-former usually gets warm much sooner than the OT. Not only is it supplying the power to the tubes which will draw more current the harder you drive them, but it also supplies the heater winding which has a healthy current draw as well. On all of my amps the PT will get warm way before the OT and in most cases the OT doesn't get warm at all.

Thanks Anitoli as I have same observations.

Time to warm the house with another input xfmr heating event on a cold Saturday afternoon... best part of Canadian winters!
