EL34 tubes in 2266

Postby Cascadem » 05 Feb 2018, 10:21

Ok so
I tie pins 1 and together 8, check the bias to make sure I can get to 35 to 38 mv.

Can the power transformer support the extra heater draw of the 34s?

This amp is a 2266. I may end up using a different ot with the proper ratio but for now, I am trying new things!

Update, tried the el34 thing this evening, even put an ot from my dsl in the amp to try and make everything semi correct, just dont care for the tone...the quest goes on...I love the kt66 sound partially, but, there is a certain mushy quality to the low end that I cant get rid of when playing at high preamp gain levels, it is not new, its always been there from stock..moving away from the kt66 certainly got rid of that but, the amp lost all of its great qualities that it did have just like steve said it would...maybe 6l6 or 5881 tubes, maybe 6550 tubes, certainly not el34s though.

Are you talking about that "farty" noise that is prevalent on the low E string? That is what put me off about the amp when I demoed it years ago.

Its something like that, I gotta be missing something I can tweak in the circuit, but where...the kt66 tubes themselves sound best so far, however, I gotta tighten the bottom up and thin the lower mids. Maybe it the first two cathide bypass caps, they are still stock, I would be surprised if it was their values because I really think I have the oreamp tuned almost perfect at this point.

I think at this point I would look at two things.

Your speakers
Your guitars pickups

Sometimes "mud" is because your pickups are to high.

Also don't overlook the strings. Some pickup configurations do not work well with some metal/alloys used in strings, especially the wound ones. Changing to a different brand of strings can make a huge difference, sometimes for the better or worse but you will find out which ones are best suited for a particular guitar.

I have been thinking about trying a different brand of strings actually!

I agree, the speakers are v30s, but recently I have been thinking about going with G12M or G12H 25-30 watt speakers. I could.use an upgrading my pups too. Been looking at some pearly gates or something in that ball park!

G12M or G12H 25-30s, either of those will sound better IMO than Vin30s with this amp. Lot of choices for pickups todays, I would not install anything to hot for this amp, it will sound better with less hot pickups. Cannot emphasis how important a good guitar setup it. Pickups that are to close to the strings will makes any amp sound farty.
