Need a pedal for some metal!

Postby ItsChrispyTv » 10 Jan 2012, 10:56

Hey guys i need a overdrive/distortion pedal to push the vintage modern a little harder, more into mesa type distortion would be great.
Using 2266 with a 2x12 V30 cab.
Many thanks in advance.
Chris

If you still want/need more gain then HDR is giving you then you have many options. I Would only consider a overdrive if you want to stay in HDR, in LDR a distortion pedal will sound better.

Lot of them on the market. If you want a darker gain like a MESA get a dirt box you can eq. The tube Blackstar pedals sound pretty good. Might also take a look at the pickups your using as that is also a change that can help. The bareknuckle War Pigs are hot and dark.

As a last resort there are some mods you could make to your amp to get you there but I would simply buy another amp before I did that.

maybe a mxr 10band in the loop. You can shape your tone and add a little gain.

I second those Blackstar pedals, if you're looking for some serious Metal tones get that Gus G. pedal they make (Darkfire I think?). I think MXR makes that Fullbore Metal that sounded pretty good to my ear.

Other than that, I say ditch the amp and get something else. I've spent a good portion of my life learning the hard way that if the amp isn't doing it for you no amount of pedals and other stuff is going to fix it. If you want Mesa metal tones, go get yourself a Mesa and you'll be happy, they're awesome amps.

I just started using the MXR 10 band Eq in the loop of my VM 2466 and I cant believe what a difference it has made. You can def get some metal tones out of that set up.

whoops...
Why don't you just look for an amp that already has the kind tone you're looking for instead of choking all life in the VM by abusing it with all kinds of dist-pedals? :doh
Poor VM :winking
Well, if you want it that way go ahead, I'd say you'll gain much less than you lose.
But as always: taste can't be argued (thank God)

The Zakk Wylde overdrive pedal sounds cool with this amp. Sometimes I am in a metal mood and I will kick it on... works great.

BB+ Demo by Steve Stevens

Through a Suhr amp that is similar to a VM (well, similar sound to mine anyway). Jump to 01:20 if impatient for playing.
