Ecc81 in V2

Postby spikei » 24 Sep 2008, 09:33

hi,
am i correct that if i but an ecc81 in V2 of my VM combo it will reduce the gain and volume slightly (20%) in high dynamic? if not V2 which position would most effect the high dynamic gain and volume but not the low dynamic range? :? the ecc81 reduces the gain by approx 20% compared to an ecc83 i think

You're correct, an ECC81 in V2 should drop the gain in HDR, but not LDR. It shouldn't affect LDR at all. I've never tried one in that position though. If you really want to drop the gain, use a ECC82. The amplification factors of the tubes are: ECC83 (100), ECC81 (60), ECC82 (17).

While it is feasible to try ECC81s and 82s where an 83 usually resides, they would normally need to be performance optimised with a few component value changes.

hi, the reason i asked the question is because i changed v2 in my tsl 60 for a ecc81 and i like the result, so i want to try it with my VM combo. i was informed that it will do no harm to the amp, is this correct?
thanks

No it shouldn't harm the amp at all.

New to the forum. I am running a 12AU7 in the V2 position and am very happy with the result, at least with my guitar, a 61 SG reisue. Less gain, of course, but I never ran the gain past 9:00 in the high dynamic mode anyway. I am also running an Electro Harmonix 12AX7 in V1, which, in my particular amp results in more high frequencies, and a little more clarity than the original V1. This, will of course vary depending on your guitar/speaker combination. :D

Glad to hear it. I'm new to the forum, and haven't had a chance to read many of the posts. In another post, I am trying to get some info from Steve regarding the low dynamic range V1. I would like to experiment a little with increasing the gain on the V1 tube. I think the amp sounds better in the low dynamic mode, but I need a little more gain than that of the stock configuration. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, you know.
