''Less is the new more..''

Postby lukemc » 24 Sep 2008, 09:49

Hi ppl,
our band played a gig in the BARFLY in liverpool last night, i used my VM Combo miced up,
instead of the usual Master Volume on 10 that usually do, iheard on a few sites that 8 supposedly sounded ''better''.
so i rolled it down to 8 and to my ears on that night it sounded much better.
not different just all round more smoother and Chunkier than before,
this is before micing it up aswell so it was a fair comparison to the normal.
and when it went through the P.A it was even better!
give it a go, see if you think 8 is the optimal volume on your VM.

I play with the guitar on 3 for clean, 5 to 6 for rythym and 8 to 10 for solos. This works for me. :)

I generally find myself with the MV at about 5 but that's just because the drummer can't compete. Seemingly he can't hit hard enough

what i do for solos is similair to steve.
except for clean i use both P-90s
bridge on 3 and rhythm on 4 but i also kick in the super hard on boost at a really low setting for extra sparkle with the mid boost still in.
sounds really nice.

5-7 for rhythm

and full blast for solos on either or both pickups, page/ hendrix/clapton depending on ure pickup and volume/tone settings
PERFECT!!!

If I'm in low range I have to dime it & hit the preamp hard with a boost pedal just to get enough volume (we play way too loud  ) but in high range I like the MV about 6 (1 o'clock?).

wow, I thought I was wierd, as I dont like my master dimed either. Sounds best at about 7-7.5 whether in high or low range. With the master dimed there is something different in frequency spectrum, pwr tube compression Im guessing, I dont really hear alot of pwr tube distortion, the tone just sorta changes and becomes, hmmm, whats the phrase Im looking for.... Not as good I guess. :)
