Gigging my new Vintage Modern tomorrow!

Postby Graemey » 04 Oct 2008, 10:11

Just bought a 100 watt VM with 425A cab and I will be lugging it to a gig tomorrow.
I bought this amp as I have been a friend of SteveD's for many years now and I know he KNOWS tone!
I have been playing a Fender Twin for a while now and I decided to find an amp that will give a little more edge and sustain but not sound harsh or brittle.
BTW, I play a Gretsch 6120 in a Rockabilly style band and Im going for a Brian Stezer sort of tone, twangy and open with some grit and mild overdrive.
Just tried my Vintage Modern at home at moderate volume level and the sound I have been after is right there!
I will report back after the gig and let you guys know how things went.
Anyone else using a hollow body guitar with a Vintage Modern?... :D

Any chance that someone will have a video camera there? Good luck with the gig!

Welcome Graemey. I too am a former Twin player who got the 2466 for the same reasons.

Love that Rockabilly sound, never thought of the VM for that type of tone but heck I suppose it would do it. Does the VM give you enough reverb or do you use a pedal for it. Welcome to the forum!

Hello all and thanks for the warm welcome!

The VM seems very suitable for a Rockabilly tone, I will be wiser after todays gig I guess! I don't plan on using the reverb as I use a delay pedal for 50's style slapback echo.
I always turned the reverb off on my Twin!

Also on my pedalboard I have a Tube Screamer and a Dod Preamp Booster but I have a feeling I won't need them now :D

I play Rock-a-Billy as well with my 2466 with great results. It's so "old-timey" feeling and organic. I was using a Silvertone twin-twelve, but the VM had a little more ummph and raw tone. I'm shopping delays, and may pull the trigger on a MXR carbon copy.

Teamed with my souped up '52 tele reissue, Harmony Rocket, and my DeArmomd M75, all bases are covered. One would think you'd never hear Marshall and Twang used in the same sentence...gives a whole new meaning to the Purple Gang.
Amps:
Marshall VM 2466
Silvertone Twin Twelve
Silvertone 10xl
Silvertone 1431
Harmony H 304-A
Pignose G40V
Ampeg V4
Ampeg VT40

Guitars:
Gibson SG Classic
Fender Telecaster '52 reissue
Harmony Rocket
DeArmond M75
Old Kraftsman Lap Steel
Danelectro U2

I recently replaced my 425 cab with a 2x12 loaded with Jensen c12k speakers. For the guys that play rockabilly and other more "rootsy" or bluesy type music, I highly recommend this combination. Still have the best of the Marshall qualities but the overall tone has more of an early "American" tone to it. I love it.

Very pleasing results last night! I ended up cranking the gains a little more than I thought I would and backing the guitar down a little for rhythm stuff. Loads more tweaking to do to find all the possibilities with the VM but hey, thats all part of the fun! Such a long time since I gigged a Marshall half-stack! Rock on!
