Greenback safe in 1x12 with 2266?

Postby dos » 11 Oct 2008, 09:58

Hello,

I'm utterly in love with my 2266 and 425A - forever thanks Steve! However, I want to have a 1x12 cab for rehearsal and home use. Would one Greenback take the 2266 alone, or do I need to look for a speaker with a higher wattage given that the 25w is supposed to be conservative and the 2266 not putting out 50w (mostly using HD)? In which case - what 50w+ Celestion speaker is closest to the Greenback in terms of sound? Would probably be played pretty loud..

Thanks!

For a 1x12 cab you will need at least a 50 watt speaker (with the 2266). A Celestion Alnico Gold would be a good choice but are very expensive. If you want to stick with greenbacks I would recommend a 2x12 cab.

I think Eminence makes a greenback clone that can handle 50 watts to keep it a 1x12. I think they have a Governor and a Legend GB, or something like that. Ofcourse a V30 would work too. There is also the G12-65, G12T-75 (I don't like those) and others.
Crossroadsnyc douche of the year, and everyone at TGP tied for 2nd

If you turn your master volume past say 5 or 6 it will probably kill one speaker eventually. As per above the Celestion gold would be the perfect choice. As far as what is similar to a greenback in a higher watt rating, I would say a Celestion G12-65. It was supposedly designed to be like a greenback but higher wattage. They can be expesive too. $180 new reissue. $100-175 used. The G-12-65 is my favorite speaker. I have used the gold and the G-12-65 with the VM and both are excellent. I recently had to cover other costs and sold my best speakers to do so. I replaced them with the G12-65 copy by Warehouse Guitar Speakers called the ET-65 and it sounds excellent with the VM and not really even broken in yet. They go for $65 new. Another alternative would be a Weber Silver Bell ceramic magnet. $100 new and about $65-75 used. Good Luck!

I would write Eminence an email and tell them what you are looking for. I've done it before, just tell them you want a vintage greenback sound with more power handling, and they will steer you in the right direction  . They are usually really good like that. I've had no issues yet. And another thing, they also have an extensive line of 16 oHm drivers, which is kinda nice.
