Mismatch on bias reading despite matched tubes

Postby ItsaRat! » 24 Mar 2018, 07:40

Hey all, I purchased a matched quad of KT66 for my 2466, let it warm up, checked the bias, and there's an 8 mv difference between the sides. So about the best I can do is 80mv on one, 72 on the other, which, I believe, is the optimum range of the bias. I now remember this being the case when I first replaced the tubes. Is this a problem? What should a fella do?

Nothing you can do about... but don’t worry...
Some newer VM models came with two bias pots but so long yours got only one, that’s how it is.
I play gigs with VM only for a many years with 4 mv difference on bias reading, mine is 50 W.
No problems at all and I love the sound.
What about sound you get?
:dunno

Ya know, I used to find it a little harsh in the top end, but I think a lot of that was my then untreated basement. Now I think it sounds kick ass. It's fuzzy and articulate at the same time. Such a great amp, and it ends up on tons and tons of my clients' recordings. :) I'll have to see how the new tubes break in.

If the bias gets too far apart between the sides you can see an increase in noise but they will work.

They will work but it sounds like you've been given a pretty poorly matched set of tubes.
You pay a premium for tube matching and I would expect them to be a bit closer than that.
