Best Overdrive Pedal with 2466??

Postby chooseyourblues » 09 Jul 2010, 13:57

I have just had my first full volume rehearsal with my VM 2466 and was very happy with the overall performance. I like to use the HDR but keep the Detail and Body under 5 for my 70's rock rhythm tones. I was not using anything for my solo tone other than a slight turn from 7 to 10 on the Les Paul volume and I found myself longing for a little more 'cream' on the solo tone.
I don't want to use a pedal that changes the tone too much, just a slight gain and mid boost.
I guess a TubeScreamer is going to get me in the ball park. Or possibly a Boss SD-1?

Any ideas? What do you guys use???

Either of those can be used, but will change the tone, and cut off low end. You can try a clean boost that will help saturate the tone some more, with less coloration of your tone. I currently have the MI Audio Boost N Buff for that reason, though I don't use it often. I usually keep the detail up to 7-8 and body at 5-6, and turn the volume lower on the guitar, then up to 10 gets all the creamy singing lead tone.
You could try upping the detail and/or body, going to about 5 on the guitar for your 70's tones, up to 7-8 for more, and 10 for leads.
It is important to have good wiring or treble bleed cap, I use the latter with good results.
An eq pedal would work as well, I hear really good things about the Detox pedal.

I highly recommend an Eq and not an overdive for hdr.

The detox is awesome for cutting or thinkening but not for a solo boost or for adding gain

I use my vm and mxr 10 band in the exact way you would like to, have my body an detail on 5 or lower then kick in the eq for solo's or more aggressive tones

The great thing about the 10band is not only can you sculpt your tone (just adding in mids etc adds gain) there is also a gain level which adds a hell of alot of gain if needed. There is also a volume boost ( the volume fader does little in actuall adding volume in hdr but thikens the sound up)

i also (very rarely) use a ZW overdrive even on low setting with a good noise gate adding an over drive to hdr causes alot of screaming and VERY hard to control noise!! It sounds killer on Ldr tho : )

You should really look in to an EQ pedal imo

+1 agreed!

Yes an EQ gives the VM its stock tone, just boosted! natural amplifier dymanics stay intact with the EQ!

Ok, i don't in anyway want to change the amps tone , just a little extra bite and cream to cut through and give me extra sustain. Do i put in line with the input (all i use is a wah) or in the loop?

The 2466 just needs a little push sometimes. This pedal should be on every players board.

Is this good in line with the amp on the HDM setting?

If I were to use a EQ pedal do I put that in line also or in the loop?

Yep, I love it in LDR as just an overdrive and in HDR it is a great boost (it pushes the VM over the edge) . I haven't had a chance to try an EQ pedal but I want to because I keep hearing good things about it.

I run my eq up front!

I try to avoid using the fx loop if possible!!

i recently set it up in the loop and found just engaging the loop (which im pretty sure sucks the tone itself) and adding a pedal casuses the amp to hum even adding a noise gate doesnt fix the problem and when playing at high volumes there was lots of noise that i didnt get when i run it through the front.

However this is something you should try yourself as there are advantages to both either way its gonna sound killer!

I'm using a SD-1 or Rat like you suggested. Body 5 Detail 7 maybe lower by one or two depending on the guitar. I use the pedals to get into 80s metal stuff like Crue and Ratt. Solo boosts I'm using EHX LPB-1 set at about noon, last in line into the front of the amp.

Some people prefer the loop, its too thin sounding for my tastes, people like Slash he uses his EQ via the amplifiers input.

My Barber Direct Drive sounds amazing on top of a just breaking up sound on the LDR. Doesn't sound like the amp itself in HDR but its a really cool usable overdriven tone in its own right, a real boutique type tone.

So far i have been using my Barber Ltd Silver low gain overdrive pedal to push my main overdrive rhythm sound in HDR into further sustain with a tiny bit more edge for riff or melody passages in songs with both of my bands and it sounds unreal!! Just remember you will need to use the well talked about "reverse boost" method to achieve a good volume boost for stand out solos and such.

The MXR micro amp or any gain or clean boost pedal will push the HDR into some extra natural sustain. My Keeley modded Rat sounds massive in the LDR as well!!!

This amp will take any good quality boost/OD/Distortion pedal very well just try a few and pick the one that suits your style and pocket.
