As many of you know, I bought a Bogner Uberschall. Thx to the douchebag seller on Ebay who doesnt know how to pack an amp, I was left with replacing the preamps. The Bogner is a "darker" sounding amp. I wanted to brighten it up a bit so I put two high gain Chinese 12ax7s in the gain stage. This worked a little to well. So I want to pull one of the Chinese tubes and replace it with a high gain tube that is a little darker. I have read so much info in the last few days that my head is spinning. I have come across some tubes described as "high gain" and "bright" but Im not having any luck finding anything described as "darker" sounding.

Any suggestions?

Were the sino tubes brand new? If so let em burn in for bit, try em for about 25 hours that should smoothe em out a bit.

The tubes arent harsh/thin/brittle. It just that they brightened up the amp a little more than I wanted.

I think we are all guessing here. Owning tube amps never was cheap, you just have to try combinations until you hit on something you like.

As long as you know what each preamp tube does you can use that to start swapping. I would start with three type of 12AX7's and one 7025.

Try the TungSol
Try the Mullards
Try the high gain LPS
And get a 7025.

Most my amps are loaded with the preferred series 7025's and TungSols's. Low noise is most important to me.
