Scratching noise on 2266c presence knob

Postby Supernaught » 08 Dec 2008, 15:28

Last night I was playing with the settings on my VM combo and tried the "0 body, 0 detail, max master volume" thing. While I was twiddling the eq I discovered that the presence control made a weird scratching, rasping noise when turning it. Its not like a normal dirty pot type scratching but a more subtle, uniform sound. I couldnt hear anything when the master volume was below 7 or so.

I've only had the amp 4-5 weeks so Id have thought a dirty pot was unlikely.

Anyone have any ideas, or if it is a dirty pot whats the best way to clean it? WD-40 has always been good to me in the past but Id rather check first...

That is completely normal.

"... it's normal for the Presence pot to be a bit noisy when turning it because there is a DC voltage and current present there. The same is true of any old Plexi, it's nothing to worry about." - SteveD

I've had old plex's too that never had scratchy pots and none of my VM's do this at all.

Use electrical contact cleaner like De-oxit

If I spray the thing and it's caused by DC voltage, I'm wasting my time, and possibly de-lubricating the contacts, attracting dust, and shortening the lifespan. The rest of the pots are perfectly quiet. I heard about the Deoxit. Thanks Steel ... you're the best bro. :pimp
