6100LM problem

Postby jeffster » 04 Feb 2009, 18:36

Ok, so I have had this 6100LM for a number of years (bought it used) and have never been able to use Channel 2 or 3 as they are just to tinny sounding. I suppose if I was into the super over the top death metal or something I might have a winner here, but alas, I would love to get a nice decent sound out of it. I end up using Channel 1 (Clean) with a DS-1 in front of it. I know Satriani used to do the same with his, but after hearing some 6100 clips on YouTube, it seems more and more obvious that something is wrong with this amp. I had a tech check it out a few years ago and replaced a couple of the resisters that were fried and caused it to bias way too cold (I found this out as I took it over to Bob at Eurotubes a couple months after I bought it and he couldn't get it to bias in an acceptable range).

For reference, here was the tech report:

"Jeff,
The beast is done and ready to go. Here is what all was done to it. Replaced power tubes with JJ 6L6, C209, C210, a R212, and repaired 2 burnt traces. All damage occurred in the bias section which is why your old power tubes were in runaway. R212 had burnt and that was a main problem. C209 and C210 which are your bias filter caps did not check up to standard so I replaced them with Sprague Atom caps that are over rated (voltage), so they should never have to work hard. All key solder joints were redone. Grounding was checked and cleaned, tube sockets tensioned.

$2.00 22uf 250v Sprague Cap
$1.40 10uf 150v Sprague Cap
$ .25 1W resistor
$54.00 Matched quad of JJ 6L6GB
$40.00 Labor
$40.00 Return Shipping
$137.65 Subtotal
$20.00 Discount
$117.65 Total"

Anyone have any thoughts? I would really love to sell it and buy another VM for a backup, but I can't in good faith sell it sounding like this.

Thanks!
