Dean, how do you like those Gold Lions? What kind of tone are you getting with those compared to the stock KT66's? Anyone tried a Raytheon Black Plate in V1? I have one in my 2500 I'd like to try out when my 2266 arrives. Thanks.

That I really liked some tube configurations but only in certain situations. Gold Lions are great for smooth half driven tones but they start to lack definition when driven hard compared to Shuguangs. The only preamp tubes I really liked apart from the stock tubes were the Tung-Sols, but I found that there was something in the mid-range I didn't always like.

I find that the stock tubes just works best overall for me. I took some time to discover that they actually produce the tone I want in many situations, more than any other tubes do, and that I can drive the amp really hard without loosing the definition and responsiveness. I don't know... perhaps because the amp was actually designed and tuned with those tubes installed.

I've only had my VM for a couple of weeks now, I love how it sounds, I will pick up a pair of Shuguangs as I like to have them to hand, as for the pre, I have a mix of Tung Sols and an EH and JAN 5751 in there at the moment.

Do Marshall sell the Shuguangs direct? Had anyone had any luck with the JJ KT66's, I love there EL34's in my 2203 and DSL.

Yeah man i really like em! they brought my amp back to life! but having said that i bought it used and they were old tubes and this is the first time id changed power tubes! So i cant compare to the stock tubes cos mine were old and worn when i got em! but i really liked the tone! seems fatter warmer and in general just bigger!

not sure if that helps! its hard to describe the tone tho cos i dont have my amp to hand and havent been home for two weeks! but i posted a fairly long post here a couple weeks ago when i changed em! im pretty sure i described it in more detail there! if i have time tmrw il link the thread.

I just replaced all the stock 12ax7 with mullard reissue (kept the stock KT66)
I haven't actually expect them to sound nice - I have read lots of reviews where people say they sound bit flat etc..

But I really enjoy them especially after they get warm - they have that nice not to harsh /smooth lows and are generally cleaner

well here is a little sample - recorded 15 minutes after swap:

All stock over here. And I've owned the amp for like 3.5 years... maybe I should take it in for a some tube replacement, and get my purple LED up again.
