Tubes...Break in?

Postby Green Manalishi » 09 Jul 2010, 15:42

Do tubes have a break in period? I recently put new Winged Cs in my 6100, and also some new preamp tubes in, and I wasn't so pleased, meaning I didn't get the tone improvement I was expecting.

Now, about a week later playing it daily, it sounds better. Am I imagining this? It seems the highs are smoothing out, the mids are filling out and the bass is tightening up and becoming solid.

I have heard of "Burn In" time for tubes, but I think it is completely subjective IMO. It may be because now your ears are used to the subtle tone change that came with the different tubes. It could be the mains supply you're plugged into is at a different voltage today than from last week (say 117 instead of 112, which happens more often than you'd think).

Thats why when I change a component, be it pre/power tubes, pedals, etc., I try to give them a good run for at least a couple weeks before I praise or persecute. Having your ears get used to a certain sound I really think plays a large factor, so people that try to A/B stuff multiple times in a short period may not be giving each component a fair shot. Call me crazy...... :crazy

Not really a break in period, as with say, speakers. There is a burn-in period of around 6 hours or so where the bias might drift a bit. Generally they will sound pretty much like they're going to as soon as you put them in. :pimp
