Less than a week old, 2466 Making Static Popping Noises???

Postby chooseyourblues » 11 Jul 2010, 14:43

Anyone help me here? On standby and while playing Static Popping is starting to come trough the amp. First the odd little crackle then a big thump of static reverberates out from the speaker cab. This is stop start but seems to get worse the longer the amp is on.
Think I'm going to have to take it back.
:eek

You sure your speaker lead is plugged all the way in and no shorts? Also, make sure you are using a speaker lead and not a guitar cable from head to amp. That will cause a major problem. Also, make sure all the tubes are securely plugged in and that you don;t have any shorts in your guitar or guitar cable to amp. Try another guitar and a different cable straight into the amp (no pedals etc).

Hi, yea I am a semi pro level player so I know the basics. I have good quality leads, (george L's) and my guitar is regularly checked over by a tech. I also took out all the tubes and checked the connections; all seem fine. i also don't use any pedals. In face the noise cvomes through the cabnet even when there is no guitar plugged into the head.

Ok just checking. Shorts as you know can happen at any time, just from a bump to the guitar or amp. Have you checked to make sure the speaker wires inside the cab are all connected. Could be one of the spade connectors jiggled loose.

Also, have you tried turning each pot to make sure none are scratchy? If one is, turn it back and forth fast several times to try to clear out the dirt and/or use some De-Oxit. Perhaps there's some corrosion inside the pot or on one of the lead ends http://www.caig.com/

Also, George L's could be the culprit if the lead was still plugged into the amp but not the guitar. Worst cable I ever used and not reliable at all for road use IMO. The screw holding the ends on almost always comes loose and shorts out and needs re-connected especially if you have to plug and unplug it a few times. Try a different cable like a Lava if you really want a reliable, better sounding and less noise than the George L cable http://www.lavacable.com/ I stuck my shorted out L's in the drawer after getting tired of fixing them.
