Preamp Tube Recommendations

Postby bluesrocker » 23 Aug 2010, 14:37

I recently purchased a 2266c and have been very happy with the tone up to 4 on the MV. At about 5 and up the tone begins to clean up and becomes brighter. Any recommendations on preamp tubes to keep the darker, dirtier tone at higher volumes? It's currently the stock set-up V1- JJ V2 - 4 Shuguangs. I'm using HDR with mid-boost in.

You might try a JJ in your V2 (HDR) position. Many people including myself have found the JJ ECC83 to be among the darker flavored of that type and they tend to be higher output than most. Many times they are criticized for being less bright than others.

I find the Tungsol has a little more bass than JJ. The Mullard reissue tubes also have a pretty flat response which has more bass than JJ. To my ears the JJs have a lot of upper mids.

Welcome to the forum bluesrocker. :Thumbs

Have you tried adjusting the Body and Detail and turning the Mid Boost off when the MV is past half way. You can certainly turn the Body up higher when the Mid Boost is off.

I use a Tung-Sol in V1, and a JJ Gold in V2. Works well for me.

V1 is for both High and Low Ranges. V2 is for High Range only.

What is the problem with your Low Range?

Hi Steve

On the LDR channel i have: low volume, bad sound on certain frequencies, sound not cutting through. I thought, I had it solved with new power tubes, but I have not. Im rather misserable with the amp right now :roll

Thought I would change all of the preamp tubes to eliminate them as a fault.

But all help would be appreciated:-)

Regards Hans
