Gold Lion vs. JJ

Postby jab » 01 Sep 2010, 15:49

need a kt66 replacement for my 2266 head. Local tube dealer carries the Gold Lion and JJ's. I'll buy it from him as he'll bias my amp for free on the spot.

Any opinions out there b/w the kt66 Gold Lions and JJ's?

I love JJ tubes, but don't buy the KT66s! Trust me.

The Gold Lions are excellent tubes and you wont regret buying them.

Hi jab,
Your post reads as if you only intend to replace one KT66!!!!!!!!
Please tell me you're going to replace them both with a matched pair.

no, definitely put in the pair. Took them to my shop yesterday and they biased my amp while I waited. Took him probably 30 minutes to bias it and he's been doing it for 32 years. After watching him and all his equipment, glad I didn't even think to attempt it on my own. He was having a little trouble finding the right balance and tested all my preamp tubes, and ended up switching the 2 KT66's position to get it where he wanted. He ended up around 44 on the bias. He does believe the Gold Lion is the best KT66 made 'today' and uses them in everything, but he did say the stock Marshall tubes by no means suck. Didn't seem to be a big fan of the JJ 66's.

Also interesting he tested the output fully cranked on my 2266 and said it only puts out 35 watts rms. Said he sees that on Marshalls all the time. Doesn't bother me, just interesting.

If you're ever in the market for tubes, he stockpiles them and ships anywhere in the world. Very knowledgeable guy - he's known as "Lord Valve" he's been doing this so long.

That is surprising on the watts. I always heard people say the Marshall watts were more than other amps' claims - different governing or something...

My 1987x sure sounds louder than 50 watts! Like twice as loud as my 50 watt 4502 combo.

35 would probably be good gig volume for my band.
Amps - Marshall Super 100JH, 1987x, 2204 Master Volume, 4502, Bassman 59 LTD, Fender Champ (79), Fender 75
Guitars - Les Paul Standard, ES-335, 62 Strat RI, 85 MIJ Squier Tele, Guild D55
Effects - Picture Wah, Octafuzz, Sunface NKT, KOT, KR Boost, MDV-2, DM-2

35 watts is about right for the Low Dynamic Range setting, however, it should put out close to 50 watts on High Dynamic Range.
