5751 vs 12ay7 vs 12au7

Postby BluesDoggydog » 05 May 2011, 08:44

So, what tube do you guys think would be best for me? My idea is to put it in the v2 for a little less gain and a little warmer sound in HDR, 5751 vs 12ay7 vs 12au7. Doesnt really matter if i loose some volume since i never play it over 6 anyway :´( (2266 btw)

Less gain, yes. But still nicely overdriven even with the 12AU7. Gets you in the neighborhood of SRV. Perhaps more crisp and less fuzzy. With a 12AY7 I was hearing a little bit of Jimmy Page tone, along the "plexi" line. Nothing drastic in either case. Both very good. Some loss of volume but not too much. Can't say warmer, because they all retain crispness and are slightly less distorted. Maybe a tad less harsh than a 12AX7? Seriously you need to try them out for yourself.

I would get both 12AY7 (gain of 45) and 12AU7 (gain of 20) and try them out because they offer a bigger change than a 5751 (gain of 70), which is not as far from a 12AX7 (gain of 100) as the others. Ideally try all of them.

Sure will! find it quite difficult to get ahold of some good tubes in sweden though, dont have any ebay : / but i found some sweet finnish site on the forum that i might order from :) this is kinda the tone im after, the sweet overdriven tone Gary Moore got. Btw playing through a les paul traditional pro with 57 classic + burstbucker 3 :)

I think the 12AU7 was getting closer to that sound than the others. Kind of a stinging blues tone. Not over the top distortion. I had the Detail at 7 and the body at 6 and just switched V2 for comparing them. Could definitely notice the lower gain but it was still burning. I find they all sound good. Have fun and good luck!

This is just my opinion. Anyone that feels the need to run a 12AU7 in V1 of their Marshall is playing the wrong amplifier. Marshall's are sold as higher gain amps. If you want something lower in gain, try something else.

I've followed Gary Moore for years and I never read/heard of him using a 12AU7 in V1 of any of his amps.

Lot's of great Marshall's and a few good guitars.

Will probably try it out soon, i got some really low output PAF humbuckers in my main lespaul which pretty much did the job but might try it anyway!
