Songs to cover - looking for some help please

Postby musicman » 05 May 2009, 15:50

Hi all,
I'm looking for some help please.
My new cover band needs 4 or 5 more songs & we can't seem to agree on any.
Line up is guitar/vox, guitar/keys/vox, bass/lead vox, drums/vox.
We're all competent musicians, lead vox has a reasonable range (can manage Roxanne tuned to Eb), some not too complex harmony vox.
We're looking for songs that haven't been played to death - any suggestions welcome.
Thanks !

Giving the flexibity you have with the vox in your band I would select a Phil Collins tune such as "I wish it would rain down" pretty easy and would be a welcome to many. Also perhaps try a Eagles classic.

Now one song I think surprises people live and always gets people going in a club is Tom Petty "Last Dance with Mary Jane" your keyboard player should be able to pull off the harmonica part with a good Blues Harp patch.

Another song I played with some friends at a party a few months ago was a old Steve Miller song called "Serenade" the people LOVED it, very smooth and simple rythem line and harmonies easily done. This song sounds kicks ass on the VM

With my band, I try to make sure that we don't do too many songs that you hear all the time on the radio and more importantly that other bands cover. We have 2 guitars, keys, bass, drums, plus singers, so very close to yours. None of us are professional musicians but we don't suck too bad so we like to choose some challenging tunes. We played a charity gig on Tuesday and this was the set list:

1. Little Bones - Tragically Hip
2. Only Happy When it Rains - Garbage
3. Night Speaks - Trey Anastasio
4. Favourite Mistake - Sheryl Crow (version with Clapton)
5. American Girl - Petty
6. I Know a Little - Lynrd Skynrd
7. Chain Gang - Pretenders
8. Possession - Sarah McLaghlin
9. Interstate Love Song - STP
10. No Rain - Blind Melon
11. Middle of the Road - Pretenders
12. Everlong - Foo Fighters

Maybe some of these will be suitable for you. We also have recently played Funk #49 (Joe Walsh), I Don't Need No Doctor (John Mayer version - smoking!) and of course, Crossroads just because it's so much fun.

Thanks guys - I'll check all of those out as there are quite a few that I don't know from the titles. (I stopped lisening to "new" music in the late 70's - only joking !)

Im a big fan of doing covers no one would expect but goes "man I haven't heard that in forever". That being said, the last cover band I was in a few years back broke out a few really cool ones...

The Smithereens "Blood and Roses" or "Behind The Wall of Sleep"
Alice Cooper "Be my Lover"
Steve Earle "Copperhead Road"
The Clash "Brand New Cadillac"
The Cult "Love Removal Machine" or "She Sells Sanctuary"

Thats such a fun song to play. Billy Duffy is an under rated player.
