Guitar Straps

Postby BNS » 15 Aug 2008, 20:09

I don't think I've seen anyone discuss straps on the forum. Who makes the best quality, the most original or the most interesting straps?

Check out these straps from Double Treble, very soft calfskin and custom lettering. I love the 3in wide strap.

For a good cheap strap I like Levy's. Very comfortable.

I have 2 straps. One was partially eaten by my daughter's pit bull/lab. Now I play my Les Paul a bit higher than I'd like.

Strap Locks:

I have a guitar I don't really want to change the strap thingy on - is there a strap lock that uses the stock strap attachment knob thing? Sometimes the guitar strap comes apart from the guitar, I'd like to lock it. I've used strap locks before, but the ones I've used in the past have always required replacing the attachment on the guitar itself.

It's a PRS.

Thanks.

I've looked for something like that but with no luck. You'd think someone would make it. I have strap locks on my LP out of necessity (ever dropped a Les Paul on your bare foot?) :x I've never had the strap slip on my Strat.

Just stumbled on this old post.
I use a gizmo called a 'Lokstrap' - think Dunlop make 'em?
It's two locked circles of plastic that clip over your strap on the strap button and locks the strap in place. Does a superb job and no guitar mod required. Cost me a £1 a set here in the UK and I think Stewmac does 'em for about $2 in the US.

I have used them .. and they do help ... but they tend to fail over time.
I have had a strap fail on me live where the guitar went straight to the floor ... :cuss
After that experience I make sure I have good quality and reliable straps.
DiMarzio Italian Leather ClipLock Strap.
Totally satisfied with that one .. a little expensive ... but I use those on my expensive guitars.

If anybody likes vintage looking straps I highly recommend this company:

http://souldier.us/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1

Custom straps made to your order. Made out of seat belt material (though you'd never know it looking at them). Reasonably priced, extremely strong and cool as hell.

I've had one on my LP for a while now and love it. So much in fact I just ordered another one for my Strat.

On Straps whatever is cool, I have a couple of the nice Levy's ones I am using right now as well.

Regarding locks, yes the Schaller ones can come apart on your strap. They are still the best available and there are ten different ways to keep that from happening. Put some tape around the threads and use a wrench to tighten it down. I haven't had a problem with them in years.

Also, you can use a rubber washer for a cheap strap lock.

Best straps for vintage look are these. I love mine. http://hippiestrap.com/

Paul Gilbert and lots of big stars today use them including Billy Cox from Hendrix's band and many more though I had mine before Gilbert. He embroiders your name inside and they are super heavy duty. Tell Patrick that Frank sent you.
