VM 2x12

Postby slowpokerhino » 04 Sep 2008, 18:38

I'm sure most of you are familiar with Faze's custom 2x12 cab. Well, he needed to sell it & I needed to buy it so..

I had intended on replacing the grill cloth with the "correct" VM grill cloth but pictures really don't do it justice. I think it's going to stay as is except for the necessary speaker change.

Right now it has G12Cs. With my 100 watt head that wont work. I ordered a pair of Jensen C12k 100 watt speakers and should be getting them today or tomorrow. Weird combo I know but when I was doing my speaker testing I really liked the VM through the speakers in my Twin. They are C12Ns. Basically the same but 50 watts. I wanted the higher wattage since I'm not big on speaker breakup & I've read countless reviews that say they just sound better.

Well, I got the Jensens and really like them. However, I think they may be defective. The highs and mids sound great but I have a lot of low end fuzz. I'm running them clean. Most noticeable at low volume (really annoying). Sounds almost like they're blown.
How do I know if they are bad or if they just need breaking in. Obviously they are new so they aren't broken in but is this normal? Will the lows clear up through use? Seems to be coming from both speakers.

Okay I found the problem. It's just one of the speakers. When I push on the cone there is a rubbing noise. This is what I must be hearing when I hit the low notes. The other speaker doesn't do this and I tested it by itself and it is fine.

Will this work out on its own or do I need a new speaker?

I am not 100% sure on this, but I think the speaker may be defective

Our bass player had that problem when he ordered some Hartke speakers. It was the coil rubbing one side since it wasn't centered correctly.

Before you return the speaker, take a careful look inside the frame at the spider where it meets the cone. Sometimes you can get a washer or screw in there and it can cause buzzing, there's a lot of magnetic energy there and it can grab and hold metal. But if you get rubbing when you move the cone, the speaker is most likely defective. Break-in won't help. There are ways of fixing an off center cone, but it involves removing the dust cap and melting the coil former adhesive with acetone. It would be best to return the speaker for a replacement.

Just an update. The speaker was indeed defective. I have sent it back and should be getting a replacement in a week or so. Man I hate waiting, but at least I know it's getting there.

Thank you guys for your input.
