Is this for home practicing, jamming with friends or gigging ?
If he's new to bass, I don't think he needs super hi end equipment unless you folks are rich.
I have been using Peavey bass equipment since the late 70's, been on the road with them all over the states and Canada on all sizes of stages and through all temperature extremes North America has to offer. I've never had one / zero / zilch / nada / nadia comanece problems EVER !! Peavey stuff is affordable even for a po boy like me and meets all my low end bass playing needs.
I wouldn't even hesitate to buy Peavey bass gear made 35 years ago, as long as it hasn't been abused. Worn = OK Abused = No. Same as most other well made stuff.
I use a little Peavey micro bass amp for home practicing. No sense shaking the walls just practicing scales and modes etc. For playing out, I'd grab a peavey MK IV or III head and run it though a cab with a couple 15's or an 18 cab along with a 6 / 10 cab. ( Six 10 in speakers) ..that's my favorite combination and then use the built in cross-over on the Peavey head to direct only the lower frequencies to the 18 cab and mids and highs to the 6 tens. Killer sound, plenty of highs and mids with a huge bottom.
