Ohms and connecting speakers

Postby rineanna » 24 Nov 2013, 12:28

Hi everyone, this is a PA related question. I'm running a Prosound 1600W amp into two 8ohm speakers. I want to add some subwoffers to it and am looking at buying two 4Ohm ones. How would I connect this up or can I? Woofer has a built in passive xover so I was thinking amp --> woofer --> tops
How would the ohms workout then. Could I run like that without doing damage?

I also have another power amp so would I be better off running the woofers off one amp and the tops off another?

That all depends on the amplifier being used.

It would be best to run with separate amplifiers if things match up correctly. Subs require more power especially if lower SPL.

Check the amp's spec's to see what the rating is for ohms. Most solid state amps will say no lower than 4 ohms. If you are running 2- 4ohm speakers, you would be best to either run each on it's own amp, or somehow wire them in series (8ohm), but then you'll need a high(er) powered amp.

Just checked: http://www.maplin.co.uk/power-amp-1600-220537

This amp would be pretty good to use in stereo mode @ 4ohms 1 sub/speaker per side. If the other amp is lesser power, it would be better to run your top-end/mids through that...
