speaker emulator

Postby bop75 » 29 Mar 2015, 12:21

Not user if this is the right forum for this question. I'd like to try using speaker emulator software for recording. But I can't seem to find how to hook up my amp output to my computer. Everything I've run into doesn't seem to answer the question. I've a class 5 and a 50th Jmp1 1 watt. I do have an attenuator with a line out.

What do I need to do this? Any clear you-tube videos? I'm using Audacity and I think it will handle the software part of it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello,
Connect line out to input of your sound card!
Set the gain a little lower to avoid clipping and make sure you route correct input in your software.
What sound card do you use?

Here is what I have and it cost me less than $150:

Behringer Direct Box $39.99 (I know it's Behringer, but it does the job :tounge )

M Audio M-Track Interface $99.99

Add a mic cable of your choice to connect the direct box and the interface and you are good to go!

My setup is as follows:

Guitar > ADA MP-1 (BBE Sonic Stomp in FX Loop) > Class 5 > Direct Box > M-Track > PC

From the output of the Direct Box, I either hook to the Class 5 speaker or a 8 Ohm, 20 Watt resistor to emulate a speaker load. I do this if I just want to hear sound out of my PC speakers and not the amp. It makes for quieter recording as well.

To the original point...

I tired to go directly to my sound card (M Audio Audiophile) and I found the results less than satisfactory. Clipping was hard to control and the impulse plugins I messed with were pretty underwhelming.

Which jack are you connecting from the class 5 to the direct box? Could I use the line-out on my attenuator to the direct box? Where do I plug the output from the M-track in the computer? The mic line in? Just want to be sure.

The M-Track connects to your computer via USB.

Here is the amp and speaker connections for the direct box:

Left connection is the output from the amp. Right connection is the output to the speaker.

This is the mic cable connection that runs to the M-Track (note the little button on the upper left that offers cabinet emulation):

Lastly, the other end of the mic cable goes into the M-Track:

As for your attenuator question, I'm not sure, as I've never messed with one. :think

You can connect line out from attenuator to line in/ real tek.
I'm afraid your sound card isn't quite good for recording but it can be done.

don't connect attenuator output to your computer.
Which attenuator do you have?

Why don't you record JCM1? You don't even need attenuator!

I have a Weber Mini Mass 50 attenuator. After hearing how loud the Class 5 was I pick it up. That was before I found out about the bedroom trick. So I use both the attenuator and the bedroom trick to keep the volume lever at conversation levels with the same sound.

In regards to the sound card. Are you saying if I run my amp into the computer my card won't be able to record the output. Right now I'm micing my class 5 10" with a zoom H2n. What sound card would I need?

I haven't played around with the JMC1 that much. I just got it.

Got ya on the USB part.

Is there a reason for not running the amp output directly to the M-Track? I see labels for guitar inputs in the picture. The attenuator reduces the volume between the amp and the speakers without changing the sound. I believe the attenuator line-out could also be run to a mixer, not sure in this case.

For me, it was a matter of what sounded best. First, I tried running the preamp, at instrument level, direct to my sound card. It sounded like ass. I got the M-track... Preamp still sounded like ass. Same with taking sound directly from the Class 5. When I put the direct box in the mix, it gave me a more usable and controllable sound. The direct box has a couple of 20db pad switches that tame hot outputs and I think that is what helped me get what I needed.

I don't know enough to really say that you can run your attenuator in the same fashion.

Thanks skinnyj. I talked to Sweetwater about the line-out and they said it would be fine. Using the attenuator, you can completely kill the single "volume" from the amp to the speakers. It's has dial nob to adjust the output to the speakers. I'll get the direct box if it doesn't work.
