Spent some time today in a amazing recording studio that was just recently finished. One of the things I had interest in learning was how they recorded guitar amps. The key to all of it was this Radial JDI DI box they used, very cool little box.
Basically what I seen them do was very clever. First they mic'd up the cabinet and recorded it on one track, no fancy expensive mics simply a single SM57 in the sweetspot. The guitar player and engineer worked together to nail the perfect position by monitoring the sound through headphones as the guitar player played.
Next they used the other output to put a total dry signal on another track. Once the track was recorded he used a guitar program to dial in another tone with the software to enhance the original track..... very interesting. Then he took that track and backed it off by 10m/s which created that "wide huge" sound, amazing what that little trick does.
I know this is basic re-amping but it was the first time I seen it used with excellent results. There were some other tricks with the eq I learned that I never thought of before. Great day of learning some good stuff.
I ordered one of these Radial JDI boxes immediatly after I got out of there and going to use the JMD as my preamp to color a re-amp dry track with the VM as the primary track.
