My studio build - suggestions welcome!

Postby Papus » 06 Nov 2011, 19:55

My studio build has commenced!

The room is 27' x 10' with 10' 5" ceiling.
Construction is taking place in the carport which is on a separate concrete
slab under the main roof of the house.
One wall is the house exterior brick wall.
The other three walls will be stud walls with exterior cement sheeting and interior plasterboard/green glue layers.
Insulation will be dense semi-rigid fibreglass.
Bass traps will go in all corners.
Primary reflection points will be treated with a combination of semi-rigid fibreglass absorbers and foam diffusers.
There will be a cloud above the mixing point.
The window will have two laminated 6mm panes with an airgap of approx. 90mm.
There will be two solid-core doors with rubber seals all around.
HVAC is via convoluted air vents in the brick wall and ceiling.

I've modeled the room in Google Sketchup.
Currently experimenting with various configurations of equipment and furniture.

The room will predominantly be used for recording jams with buddies with occasional commercial recording work.
I would greatly appreciate people's input on the room layout, especially the ergonomics and practicality of placing the equipment.

I require the layout to allow me to easily move from operating the mixer & computer to playing my rig and sometimes playing the Hammond when I'm doing my own recordings.
There needs to be sufficient room for a drum kit and for a singer to ponce about.

All suggestions are welcome!

:)

That looks really cool. Congratulations. My only thought from personal experience is not to get married to where the amps are relative to the piano and relative to where the drums might be for a jam. I've just built a home studio and have had to move things around a lot to get all the instruments to blend properly for live play. You will also need PA speakers somewhere in your room.

Thanks for the advice bro.

I figure each jam will have it's own configuration depending on who is involved.
The Hammond really needs to stay near the workstation so I can play it myself on my own recordings.
It's also there because keyboard players are the most whiney-assed pansies and complain about the volume of the rest of the band, so the further away they are the better!
Everything else is open for negotiation.

Vocal monitoring will be via headphones for the entire band or monitor wedges on the floor to keep spill to a minimum.
P.A. speakers in a room this size is a recipe for spill and inadequate volume.
I may cordon off a corner for a vocal booth after I've established a better sense of how everything will fit.
Dime that puppy!!!
