Well, even wide open George isn't getting a ton of gain. If you set the amp up similarly then yes. It also reacts very well to picking dynamics. Obviously, the more gain you use the further from a true "clean" tone you'll get when rolling back.
Yeah those 45/100s Jimi used did have a really cool clean-twangy-raw thing going especially when you hear Jimi at Monterey playin' Like a Rollin Stone. Dig this bruther, It's really outta sight... he-he

Nothing, but nothing sounds as good as a 45/100 cranked through a germanium fuzz. 1960s greatest blues guitarist Michael Bloomfield (later found dead in his car) said once that Hendrix gave him a big lecture backstage before Monterey pop festival with Jimi, Brian Jones all tripping before Jimi hit the stage and burned his guitar about the Fuzz Face and the CryBaby being the only ones that really worked. “He said the CryBaby gave the biggest range from treble to bass, and it had the hugest wah effect, the fastest action, and the most authentic vocal sound,” remembered Bloomfield. “The Fuzz Face was the most distorted sounding of such units, and the two plugged together created permanent sustain and endless distortion.
Since he was playing the JTM 45/100 at Monterey, this is basically all any Jimi lovin' player would ever really need except for adding the Uni-Vibe that Jimi found later.
