Dialing In a Tube Amp

Postby Cousin Muely » 25 Nov 2014, 09:14

Came across this. I've never tried it this way. I always just twisted knobs until I hopefully found something I liked. I experimented with this method on my DSL1 and I like the tone. EQ settings especially are a good bit off from where I had them and the amp just sounds more balanced. Tones are all around 10 o'clock. Gain 9:30 Volume 3 o'clock. This is on the Ultra Channel. Tone and Deep switches both out. Pretty smoking with my Les Paul just by itself but i still have room to boost things a bit with a pedal. Some of y'all may do it this way. If not try it and see what y'all think.

1. Turn the amp on with nothing plugged into the input

2. Turn the master volume (if applicable) and input gain all the way up so you can hear the idle noise floor of the amplifier
I have always done this but with the guitar.

I tried this on the JVM1. The controls interestingly enough ended up about the same as the DSL1.

Tried this with the JCM1. Could not even hear the amp with no guitar plugged in.

Yeah. That one's tough with it not being a high gain amp. At least with out the boost switch engaged. Much easier with the DSL1 & JVM1. I do like this method though and it's really just a once or twice thing once you know where the positions are. It gives you a baseline for the signal through the amp is the way I take it. I have got to where I like these settings for the DSL1 matched with my Les Paul. .

It's interesting to set one up this way. I can hear what the article talks about. I also ran across a thread somewhere (JVM Forum? ) where discussion was had about keep the EQs on the JVM below noon or 9 o'clock ish to fatten the tone and take away some of its abundant distortion. When I read this article above it reminded me of that JVM discussion just in a more scientific approach.
