no sound out of 50W VM combo

Postby classic rock » 10 Mar 2009, 09:48

My buddy called me up and said when he was playing his VM combo all of a sudden he lost all sound from his guitar. He plugged it straight into his amp and still nothing. I asked him if he smelled anything like a burning smell or saw any smoke but he said no. Could it be a tube that blew? He said the two main power tubes still glow when he turns on his amp. I told him to sign up so hopefully he will do it very soon so he can ask and answer any questions.

First thing to try is checking the HT fuse.

Steve my friend checked the HT Fuse and he said it was definitely blown. Nice call, greatly appreciated. Where can he get a replacement fuse though?

Hey Steve,
First time posting on here !! Really appreciate all your help on the fuse problem i had =) . I have another question .. the fuse is obviously (T500mAE 250 VP) I went to RadioShack and Home Depot they said the same thing that the fuse's i picked up were right for it. It says on it ( T500mA L 250 V ) ??? Is that right, because they said all that matters was the T500 and the Voltage 250 ??
Thank youu

Doesn't the HT fuse blowing usually indicate a bad tube? I know you can replace the fuse and normally everything works fine afterwards but didn't something happen that caused the fuse to blow in the first place? I don't recall blowing fuses on my other amps that I've had over the years.

I never thought blowing fuses was a "good" thing, it's good that it saves the thing from blowing up but when fuses blow there's usually something that caused it to blow (like a bad tube or a pot or something).

Welcome to the forum Slow Bluez. :Thumbs

'T' stands for 'Time delay' which is another name for slow blow, so yes, as long as it says T500mA you'll be fine.

The HT fuse blowing can indeed indicate a bad KT66, if you replace the fuse and it quickly blows again then that is probably what is wrong.

Replace it and see what happens (I hope you bought a few as spares anyway). You may be lucky.
