Ohms

Postby Greco » 28 Jun 2007, 02:11

Ok, Here's a Newbie question for you -

I have the 2466 head and 425A cab. I have the head set to 16 Ohms and plugged into the 16 Ohm input jack on the cab.

Is this the correct set up for one cab? (It was recommended by my dealer but he seemed a bit sketchy).

How would this set up have to change if I added the 425B to the set up?

Head on 8, cabs on 16?

What would the 4 Ohm input on the cabs be used for?

Thanks!

You have the correct setup for a half stack

As for the full stack, the VM handbook says "if more than one cabinet is connected you should set the switch to match the total impeadance of the combination" so I would say you want the head on 8 and the cabs on 4, as 2 cabs at 16 would be a total impeadance of 32 I think?? Unless the 2 speaker outputs are wired parrallel, in that case your right with the head on 8 and the cabs on 16?

Have I helped - or just confused the situation more lol!!

The head set to 16 Ohms and the cab switch set to mono and your speaker lead plugged into the 16 Ohm input is currently the correct set up for you.

If you add the 425B to your set up then make sure that it is also set to mono and run a speaker lead from the other speaker output jack socket on the amp to the 16 Ohm input on the 425B cab. Finally set the impedance selector on the amp to 8 Ohms - job done.

16 Ohms and 16 Ohms in parallel = 8 Ohms.

The 4 Ohm input on the cab is a standard feature on Marshall stereo speaker jack plates and is not really required for the Vintage Modern (unless you want to run the combo version into a 425A or 425B). The combo impedance selector has 8 and 4 Ohm settings.

Just to clarify.

Head----------Cab 1----------Cab 2

16ohms-------16ohms
8ohms---------8ohms
16ohms-------8ohms---------8ohms
8ohms---------4ohms---------4ohms

Thats just about all you will usually come across.

Altanon's chart is correct.

BTW there is no 4 Ohm option on the Vintage Modern head.

Of course you are right. That's one I should have previewed I guess. I shall now retire to shoot myself.

I thought I would do a little chart to save any confusion and fucked it up royally. Doh.

????

Because I thought that two 16ohm cabs presented an 8ohm load to the head. Am I wrong?
Will it do any damage to my head (yes, the amphead 2466.... ) if I set the speaker output to 8 ohms and connect two parallell 8 ohms speakers,
which is 4 ohms in total??? Since the 2466 does not have 4 ohm output, only 8 and 16.
Or would it be better to connect the speakers in series, one cable from head to cabinet, and switch to 16 ohms output??

If you pull the chassis out and look at the transformer, there is a 4 ohm tap. Simply unplug the wire (it's a plug so no soldering or other funny business needed) you are not going to use and plug it into the 4 ohm tap. Everything is clearly labeled and it's a piece of cake, 5 minute job even for a novice (like me).
I run my 2466 into a 4 ohm 2x12 cab. The 8 ohm switch is now really 4 and I still have the 16 ohm option if I am ever inclined to use a 4x12.
