Seeking advice - should I do a trade?

Postby ClassicRock88 » 08 Aug 2017, 15:03

I have an opportunity to get a mid-70's 412 with Blackbacks. It would require the trade of my only remaining 412 - a mid 2000's 1960BX with two rebuilt Greenback RI's. The BX is an uncommonly good sounding cabinet. Ordinarily I wouldn't trade it, except that the 70's cab was signed by Jim Marshall on the inside. Meaning he at least did the finishing work on that cab. As you guys know I run Super lead type amps and I do attenuate them a bit to protect the speakers. Will I regret this? I'm not pumped about the idea of getting rid of my BX but the 70's cabinet is such a neat piece of history. It's also a Center brace cab if that makes any difference.

With "signed" stuff, I wouldn't unless you can get some kind of provenance.

Also, I wouldn't trade a good piece of gear for a lesser piece of gear that is signed by someone. In the end, that is what you have; a lesser piece of gear. Even if the sig is legit, it isn't going to make the cab sound better. If the cab sounds as good as your current one, then that is a different story. I wouldn't trade on the signature alone if you feel your BX is a better cab.

It's a Marshall 1960. It's just an old one with the 70's 25 watt speakers. Marshall's wood shop has the person who did the finishing sign the inside of the cabs and this one has Jim Marshall's signature on it. The guy selling it doesn't even advertise it. Just when I went to look at it he was like you want to see something cool? And he opens it and there's the signature in the normal place where the finishing tech's signature goes. It is a good sounding cab. I actually used it to demo an amp that was for sale.

I would take good sound over anything Jim signed. Jim signed a lot of gear, its nothing rare.

The signature would've caught my attention and got me thinking just as you. But, you said yourself what you already have is the best sounding cabinet. You know you're risking remorse if you do this. May or may not happen but you're already questioning the decision by asking. Just my take. GAS is tough!!

You are obviously very happy with your existing cab. I wouldn't trade to get a museum piece.

If having JM's signed cab would mean something special to you. BUT I believe........
Trust in your ears. Choose the cab that sounds best to you.

Well guys you talked me out of it! I love old gear that has mojo and this certainly does, but I got to thinking about my BX. I like the look of A cabs better but when I downsized from two 412's to one (I do plan to rejoin the fullstack club eventually) I kept the BX over my 1980 1960A with G12-65's. It sounded that much better. The BX was beat up when I got it and I repaired a lot of the tolex but now she has some scars that I've put on her over my tenure with her, and I would miss it if I traded it off. I'll just wait til I can buy an old A cab or an AX outright and then have my full stack again. Til then I'm keeping the BX.

Back in the days when I was using a Head + 4x12 setup I always had an 'A' type top cabinet, thinking that it was a better look for the half stack. Many, many players will say that the 'B' type bottom cab is the better sound if you are only using one. Never had the chance to compare but I would guess the 'B' cab may have a little more bass with the slightly larger internal dimensions.
