Does the VM function best with the 425 cabinets?

Postby [Deleted] » 20 Apr 2009, 10:50

This summer I will probably be getting a 2266 and a 4x12 cab. I have found a great deal on a cab that has celestion v30s in it. I was just wondering what cab you guys play through and how it sounds.

Greenbacks break up early, so they get that gritty classic rock sound, and they sound kind of "woody" for a lack of better term. V30s would be smoother and not break up so much am I correct? I would prefer a bit smoother and less woody sound that the greenbacks sometimes give... I'm also considering 4x12 with ev12ls...

Input is appriciated

I love my 425A with the 2266 head. It has a really full, "classic" sound with good projection.

I'm loving my 425A cabinet and certainly have no regrets but I was first considering an Avatar cab with Hellatone 30 speakers. They are just G12H30 speakers that are put through a break in procedure for a smoother tone. The 12H30 speakers do provide a little less grit with their later breakup and are also a great speaker for the VM.

+1 with the G12H30s if you are looking for something with less breakup. The VM was designed with the 425 cab in mind, but which cab to use is up to you. Some like V30s and some don't.

I prefered the V30/Greenback combo but I couldn't find a cab at the time except when I tried out the amp for the first time. So i went with Herritage Green Backs and do the job more than perfect for me.

I've used my Vm with the 425A, a 1960 with Greenbacks and Vintage30's, and a JCM8001960B with GT65's.

By far my favorite is the 425. At loud volumes I felt like the v30's were more agressive but lent a certain harshness to the sound.

I actually liked the sound of the Gt65's alot with the VM, but in a band situation, I felt like the more scooped sound was boxier , and didn't sit in the mix as well.

But as the others said, it's up to what you want to hear!

On a side note, I just recently bought SurfNorthwest's DSl, and it sounds fantastic through the 425 cab!

I use my 2466 with a V30 loaded 4x12 and it sounds fantastic, I really think its the best head/cab combo I've ever played. The V30s are slightly more modern sounding than the 425, smoother and louder too, but it really is a matter of taste and what sound your going for, what works for me might not for you and I know there are plenty of people who don't like V30s with the VM.
