70's 65's PLUS newer H30's for VM?

Postby Terry McInturff » 20 Jul 2009, 12:13

Im almost certainly having the 100w head coming in and Im thinking about speakers.

I have a pair of 70's Celestion 65 watters (from a JMP cab)..very broken in...and also a new pair of the Celestion Heritage 30's (made in UK)...

Im thinking of putting these in a 4x12 in the "x" pattern.

Any predictions as to how this would sound with the 100w VM?

I definitely want that Celestion sound...kinda like Greenbacks, but maybe not QUITE as razzy.

They would sound great with the 2466, like hot rod greenbacks.

I've never had the chance to test drive the 12-65's, but they do seem to have a loyal following. Hell it seems like everything is fair game to pair up with H30's these days. I wonder if anyone actually still uses them alone.

I have never played 12-65's, but from what I've read, they sound to have a dark voice and break up slower than say standard 12M's. I'll bet Steve would be able to sum up a comparison in short order.

The G12-65 was originally created as a higher-power handling version of the G12M Greenback. Recognised as the voice of 1980s rock and blues, the speaker was particularly popular in 4x12 cabinets and is considered by many to be the finest speaker ever produced for use in this classic configuration.

Like the original G12-65, the Heritage Series re-creation of this legendary Celestion guitar loudspeaker has a tone that’s best described as sitting somewhere between the G12M and the Classic Lead 80, with plenty of definition for high-gain playing styles without being too bright or aggressive. By adhering precisely to the initial design notes, specifications, materials and construction techniques, the Heritage Series G12-65 dishes up the cherished guitar tones of the ’80s with almost unnerving accuracy.
