Vintage 30's vs. G12C "Greenbacks"

Postby LedZeppelinGuns » 29 Aug 2009, 21:25

Hey everyone,

I'm pretty sure that this question has probably been debated millions of times but I was wondering, Vintage 30's or Greenbacks? My style of music is mostly 60's and 70's rock (LED ZEPPELIN) but one of my biggest influences is also Slash (his Appetite tone). I'm not a big metal player, although I do enjoy playing Metallica.

The tones of my favorite artists (mostly Page and Slash) is the main reason why I got the Vintage Modern 2466, however I know that Slash uses Vintage 30's and Page most likely used the Greenbacks since they would have been stock in his time. I looked up their charts on Celestion's website and found that they are almost identical, but I'm just not sure what would sound better for both of those tones.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My first choice is Greenbacks. I also have a cab with a V30 and G12H30 (heavy magnet Greenback) both sound good with the VM, but the V30/G12H30 combo sounds a little more modern.
Crossroadsnyc douche of the year, and everyone at TGP tied for 2nd

I have the 425A with the G12C that I use with my VM.
Today I just picked up a 1960AV Slash signature cabinet with Vintage 30's.
It'll be fun stacking them next to each other to hear how they sound ...
I've posted some clips in the demo section of my VM and are thinking about doing a speaker demo.
I think both of these cabs would work very well with the VM.

Oh shit .. I forgot about that. The Slash cab was swiflty added to my live setup which is currently stacked away on the band minivan.
We are gigging pretty much every weekend so I haven't been able to take it home yet ... but once I get a small window I will take it home and put it through the VM test!
Actually I am thinking about doing another demo using all my Marshall tops through 3 different 4x12 cabs. The 1960A + 1960Slash + 425A.
If I am able to find some time ... :roll

No worries! I was just curious :)

After ages of scouting around I finally managed to pick up 4 x G12C speakers from VIntage Modern cabs and am interested in how others are finding these compared to other speakers. I'm finding with the G12C that I am hacing to change me amp settings quite dramatically as things get a bit 'fizzy' if I drive the pre-amp too much on my JMP.

About an hour or so at medium-low volume at home, and a 3 hour gig at LOUD.

Think they should have started breaking in a little by now?

You will start to notice a difference after about 15-20 hrs of good volume. And after that very subtle difference. Takes a long time to fully break them in.

Speaking of Slash, he uses 2 GreenBacks and 2 Vintage 30's set diagonal in each 4x12 cab. So I guess he couldn't choose between the 2 speakers either :-)

I like to run my 425 with my Orange 212 with vin30's. Awesome combination. Wouldn't mind getting my hands on a 412 with vin30's to do a real comparison, then double up for some face-melting! :numchucks
